Question about gear ratios??? HELP

Well I can clearly see I am not the only one who has had problems with this. Overall I just want to be able to go faster with less strain on my engine and I think switching to 3.54 gears is the best way to go. Higher speeds with lower RPM's is where I want to go.

Basic and average tire and gear ratio combinations are 31" tire and 3.55 gears, 33"s and 3.73s, 35"s and 4.10s, 37-38s 4.56. To get good gas mileage, still good power, and better RPMs these combinations are pretty good. You can go with a numatically smaller gear ratio for better gas milege, but less power(jump off the line) and less towing capability.

Maybe your tach is set to 6 cyl instead of 8 cyl????

Hmmm - good thought on the settings. It is just a small aftermarket tach that was in my donor truck (and attached to the same 302). I will have to take a look and see if there are any sort of adjustments on it.
