The new engine is in, everything is installed, timing is semi-correct, and she runs fantastic. The only problem is that when it runs, there is some smoke coming from where I think is the exaust manifold, escaping around the gasket. Could the be a possibility? Is it normal for new engines to smoke?
An exhaust leak will have some pressure behind it. Feel down there when you first start it before it gets too hot. Should also be an exhaust smell and maybe some black deposits.
There's some play in the mounts, it sure could have been bolted down in the wrong spot. Or misaligned gasket. The manifold casting may be cracked and that's what's leaking. Or it never got properly torqued down after final assembly.
If the manifold's been painted with high temp paint, it will smoke and stink for a spell but this will go away and you won't find any pressure behind the smoke, since it's simply burning off.
