auotmeter voltmeter hookup

i have a 78 f-250 ranger just put new autometer gauges in. i need to know where to connect the voltmeter. i have heard both the battery and alternator but i don't know. also there is an extra terminal on the back of the gauge and i don't know what it's supposed to hookiup to

If you hook it to the battery, then it will read all the time and drain the battery down. Hook it to a hot in run somewhere. You can buy a fuse tap and hook it in the fuse box if you like. Just so it turns off with the key.

I don't know what the other terminal is for. See if they have a website that has wiring instructions you can download.

If it is like the guage that i have in my a pillar, the extry post on the back is probably for nothing, just the same gauge back as the others, only using two post rather than three. Also, my gauge is for some aux batteries that I have, it is hooked up all the time, so far I can not see any significant drain on the battery. However, I did run a switch lead as well that if it did, I could change it. If it is for the main electrical system I suggest tying into a keyed on line.
