I am trying to remove my pitman arm to replace the lower seal in the steering gear box and i cannot get the pitman arm off...i bought a good usa made puller and it is tight and i am using a breaker bar and i fear that i am gonna break something...i have tried tapping it with a hammer and it will not come loose...do i need to jack up the front of the truck...i also removed the nut off the other side of the pitman arm that attaches to the drag link..i have been struggling with this for some time now and i am getting frustrated...please if anyone can give me some advice i would greatly appreciate it...thanks
Since you have pressure on the arm already, you are halfway there. If you have an have an air chisle with a hammer attachment, hammer the side of the arm that slips over the shaft from the steering sector. If you don't have an air hammer, you can hit is with a regular hammer but try not to get carried away. The air hammer doesn't hit very hard, just hits it alot. If you hit it too hard by hand with a small sledge(2lb.) you may damage the bearing inside. Good luck.
Keep the pitman arm puller as tight as possible, then heat the arm only as close to the shaft as possible. If it doesn't just pop off doing that, repeat and give it a few light taps with a hammer - light taps, like how you'd hit the back of your hand. I've had to use this method on a few stubborn ones.
Thanks guys i wound loosining the puller and then used a ball joint separator to remove the pitman arm from the draglink and then i put the puller back on and tightened it untill it popped off...thanks for your help...now im just having a problem in that the power steering does not seem to want to work at all unless i give it alittle gas then it moves alittle more smoothly but still it feels akward and jerky...do i have to bleed the system as you have to do with breaks...if anyone can help i would also appreciate it as well...thanks...
