Separating ball joints?
When jacked up, if you put your hands on both sides of my tire and jerk it back and forth, there is a little play. Kind of just a click-click from one side to another. It looked like the steering tie-rod. I got the boot off where it meets the rack at the power-steering box, and I can see that the play is in the ball joint. The rack, and nothing further in, moves, just the ball joint.
Chilton's isn't real specific about the joint, but I think it says to use a ball-joint separator tool. Anybody know what I need. And when I get this out, I'm assuming I just need a new rod with ball joint?
Also, I'm assuming to take this off I need to separate the outer tie rod at the wheel, so I'm gonna go do that and hopefully somebody will get back to me, or my Dad will come over...driving a half-hour to my house kills him. Thanks men.
Oh, the car is a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage...I know, I know, import crap. Don't get me wrong though, I still know Ford makes the best trucks. My $350 1980 Ford F-100 runs like a champ. Thanks.
