Does anybody else out ther feel funny about filling out a job application online? I mean you are supposed to type in your social security #. I just dont have a good feeling about that. I've been looking for a part time job and Pep Boys told me they only accept applications online. There are so many big chains out ther that do this. Am I just being ignorant and there is nothing to worry about?

Social Security Number
You are not required to disclose your social security number to an employer before being hired. If a job application requests your social security number, it should also include a statement that disclosure is optional.
I have done it in the past, but I also left information blank or stated that I would follow-up later. I would NEVER and have nevery allowed my SS # to be on the net or in an e-mail.
As Greywolf stated, only provide this after you are hired for proper completion of Tax (yeah) forms.
I had my Job Resume end up on the internet, all you had to do was go to Google enter "My Name" and there was my Resume, even figured out what company did it, even though it didn't make any difference!
Thanks for your help, gents. I'll see if I can get around putting my SSN down if I dont have to. I still cant see anyone being so quick to give up this info over the internet.

It really doesn't matter, its very easy for anyone to get if they really want too.
I have never felt right about online job applications. I prefer to do it in person and hand my application to the secretary.
That way, you know they have it and they get it that day. With an online form, you never know if they actually got it and how often they actually check for new applicants.
Octane
Some of the companies around here don't accept paper resumes any more....or else they'll sit on someone's desk in a pile of others waiting to be scanned (maybe--or just trashed three months later).
I don't think I've ran into an online application that required the SSN. Normally that's at W-2 time, once you're hired. But, then, I haven't applied for that many jobs.
So far, I've tried Pep Boys, Home Depot, and Lowes and they all want a SSN. I tried skipping over it, but it is a required field, so it wont let me continue without filling it in. Maybe I will call them and see if there is a way of skipping over it or typing in something else in its place.
