All the information pertaining to the engine speed is fed into the ecm from the tach, the speed sensor and fipl (whatever its called) and the ecm determines which gear and all that crap to make it go. You may get away with removing the tach sensor and cleaning it, reinstall and see if that helps. Pay attention to the position and if it has one, the jamb nut. the tach sensor operates on the injection pump drive gear so you dont want it tight against it. Hope this helps you out.
Mine did the same thing. It did mess with the auto shifting. I replaced the tach sensor and it solved the problem. Justblowingsmoke is right, about $60.00
