Not for years, but one of my most memorable trips was into the Trinity Alps when I was 12. Did a four-day trip in Yosemite when I was 5, that was my first. Done some up in the Siskiyous a few years back, (where I mentioned in that thread about the fishing trip) a place called Taylor Lake is one of my favorites. -TD
I backpacked through Europe for a month when I graduated from high school...awesome time.
I hit up Quetico Provincial Park in Canada, just north of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in MN. I guess I did more paddleing than hiking on that trip, but I had my pack with me.
I did a "light hike" with my campus rec dept last aug. You basically bring a small backpack to carry a blanket and water and you hike as fast as you can. Was too much work to be fun. It was on a great trail (Superior Hiking Trail) that runs the length of Lake Superior's shore in MN.
My latest trip was near the badlands of ND. REALLY cool hiking within a herd of buffalo, but have to watch out for the older cranky geasers of the herds though. I guess that rule can sometimes be applied to humans too. Worst part of the trip was we had to carry in all the water we would need, which we ended up not having enough of.
I really, really want to go to British Columbia. I've heard that is the place to go for backpacking. Gotta know how to deal with bears for safety's sake though.
One of my most memorable bp trips was a 10 day 80 mile trip in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana.
That was also my very first back packing experience.
It was a great trip.
My friend talked me into it.
However, there were times when my feet were killing me and my buddy was just out of arms lenght, because I wanted to throw him off the mountain for talking me into this trip.
Got to see the Chinese Wall and also a remote U.S. Forest Service landing strip.
12 day treck in New Mexico at Philmont scout ranch. 60-something miles. i was trek leader at 16. took ONE wrong turn that cost us maybe 10 minutes walkin time. AWESOME trip, wanna go back some day.
Back home we backpacked a lot, but we called them FTX's or humps.
I've gone backpacking a few times as a civilian and loved it. Down around Big Bend, Texas is a great place.
i've spent time in Big Bend and wouldn't mind packing through there. i've heard the Davis Mountains is a really nice place to pack through as well. texas is a great place good luck overseas
When I was 14 years old I went canoeing/backpacking in the boundry waters in MN. I loved it! I was a mere 100 pound girl canoeing, and portaging up to 25 rods with a 60 lb. pack AND a canoe on my shoulders! I was so proud of myself.
I remember the call of the Loons and the scenery - it was spectacular. So beautiful up there. If you get the chance, GO!
I'm going next week. I think next year I am going to Glacier National Park. Next week I am going to climb Granite Peak, the states highest mountain, in the Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness. I try to get up there at least once a year. I love it up there.
