I am having a problem with the air conditioner in my 98 expedition. The rear air works fine, it is just the air in the front keeps blowing hot air. When the problem first started I would have to keep the control on max to keep the cold air blowing in the front, but it would still change to hot air sometimes with acceleration then I would have to turn it off for a few minutes to get the cold air back. Last week I started to notice that the air would stop blowing from the main vents in the front and start blowing out of the defrosting vents up front. It kept switching back and forth without me touching a thing. Now it will only blow out of the defrosting vent no matter what I have the manual control on. Hopefully someone here can help who has had this problem before. I took the truck to a local repair shop and they told me to take it to ford. I would hate to have to go there and pay a arm and a leg. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this problem
Your HVAC system depends on vacuum created by the engine to operate components that route the air to the appropriate ducts, and to isolate or expose the heater core (a small radiator) to the air being introduced into the passenger compartment. In the event that the HVAC system is deprived of this vacuum, the system defaults to the windshield defroster setting. This is a safety feature. As the engine is always producing vacuum when its running, you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere in the HVAC system. Perhaps a hose slipped off a fitting, perhaps a hose has a hole in it or has somehow been pinched or kinked. Perhaps a fitting or a manifold has cracked. The cure is simple in theory: Find the leak.
Just so you know I have the same problem with mine. I was pointed in the right direction...that the area with the hoses we need to look at is behind the Battery.
I was told by a ford tech that I need to take it out to get to the area in question...
My 99 Eddie Bauer is having a similar problem. Rear air conditioner works fine, but front A/C is continually blowing HOT air. Does not switch to defroster. Is this more indicative of a vacuum problem or the blend door??
