a little electrical question

Fellas, I am starting to wire in my 390 on my 53 and was wondering...I am using a stering column out of a 80's GM and my new harnes wired right up to the column nicely. Now, I am at the motor and starting to wire in the volt regualtor and starter silinoid in ford secquence. In short GM column wire and then wire the whole motor area for ford. How do I do this and amI going to have problems from the GM ignition switch back to Ford engine wiring configur ation. Hope you all understand what I mean. Thanks DJ

DJ,
You can wire anything so it will work! We might need a little more info on your situation to provide any details, like?
What type of harness are you using? It must be aftermarket since it hooked up to the GM column.
Did it come with instructions and a circuit diagram?
Does the GM column have a key and do you plan to use it or are you using a dash mounted GM switch?
Are you running an auto tranny, and if so, using a column shift with the GM column neutral/safety switch or manual and clutch/safety switch?
If you can answer these questions, I can probably help you out. There may be others around here savvier than I that can help you without knowing your trucks lineage.
Good Luck,
Kent

Thanks I am using the column key mechanism and running an auto with nutral safety. Its a brand new harness for a hot rod truck of these years using a gm column. The directions suck...

DJ,
OK, that helps me out. I would suspect there is a purple or purple with white stripe wire (probably ~12 awg) coming from the NS switch on the lower end of the column. This wire will energize your starter solenoid.

The next question, does your ignition system have a resistor or is it electronic?

should have a resistior. It should be wired in the engine compartment anyway just like a 72 ford with 390

DJ,
Sorry for the lapse! Came home from work and the family wanted to go out for dinner. Those darned kids have their mother convinced that they need to eat like 3 times a day or something!

George has the wiring diagram for the stock 56 on Earl's World at this link:
http://www.clubfte.com/users/earl/Re...ing%20Diagrams
I would think your 390 wiring would be very similar, as far as under-hood to the engine, etc.

On the diagram, the starter solenoid is right below the battery and the purple wire will hook to the "S" terminal and the ignition resistor wire will hook to the "I" terminal on the solenoid.

I've got a sketch somewhere of the ignition/resistor/distributor/starter solenoid circuit. I'll see if I can find it and post it also.
Good Luck,
Kent
