well i finished my motor last night. Everything is good to go.
I was wondering before o go to start it tonight.
first........ I was reading and it and it say once the motor start to run it up about 2000 rpms to break in. That is no problem. but it also said to se tthe timing when it is turnig these rpms.
ummmmm could someone clarify this for me.
Also the main question is.............
I have the headers on the motor now but i dont have anything else behind them. Do i need to take the old exhasut and put on the headers just long enough to break it in? or will it be ok with out anything?
I am going to take it to an exhasut shop some time and get pipes put on it.
Ok...get the motor started, adjust the dizzy so it runs smooth. Don't worry about the specifics right away. You are not going to hurt it if it's a big high. Keep it up in rpm for 15 minutes or so. Keep an eye on headers(if they start glowing red your lean or timing too advanced). When you get it started, turn dizzy BACK til it starts to fumble, then back up til it's smooth. That will get you in ballpark.
As for exhaust. If your neighbors will put up with no mufflers.......let it go. It will not hurt anything(but your hearing).
Get some 2 1/4" minimum...or 2 1/2" out the back. I'm partial to the stock location, but do as you wish. I like the 'stock" location look instead of the rear bumper stuff. That is how my '69 is done, my '67 is under bed side (1/2 way) only cause that is how much pipe I had. Didn't want to spend the extra money to have anything else bent up for it.
I got you on that with the pipes. ( i dont care about the neighbors if they can come around a 2:30am with the little 4 bangers and loud fart tips i can start my 390 with nothing but headers) ( and ear plugs for me )
as soon as the motor starts do i go one and jump the RPMs up and then adjust the timing some what?
or do i adjust the timing and the get back in and then turn the RPMs up high?
I know that if i run the motor at idle it will kill that cam (and i dont want to kill it)
I primed the oil pump last night with the valve covers off to see if the oil would work its way to the top of the motor and it did very fast. I will prime the oil pump again before i go to fire it up.
Thanks

I was thinking 2 1/2 exhaust. I thought the old school side pipes would be cool.
Brandone Have your dizzy before you fire it up ..Not sloppy loose but enough where you can turn it..is what Larrys saying..Fire the motor ...you should have it pretty well static timed anyway!! if ya put the dizzy in pointing at #1 at TDC.. the motor should lite....ans for the first couple (or say a minute or so wont hurt) find the best part of the Idle (where it seems to run the smoothest!! then bring your R's up to 2000k for a minute and the take it up to 3000k for a minute..then back down to 2500k and the back and forth .dont let it stay at the same rpm for more than a minute or so.. keep it changing.. I like to break the cam in on a 20 minute run..JMO!!!
And Larrys right dont let the advance get to far out of line!! when you start seeing the heads glow red at the heads...back off the timing!!
It's not like it's going to destroy the motor is you have to "adjust" things for the first fire. Get it running, adjust the timing a bit if need, raise RPM and go.
Sometimes it takes a couple tries to get it running fully/smoothly. Not going to hurt. As long as it's pre-primed there is oil on things. The cam will not wipe itself out in 30 seconds!
No i stormed here last night. thursday night it stormed pretty bad. Have any of you ever seen just a huge path of destruction. I live in eastern nc and have been here all of my life. about the worst thing i have seen is what everone still calls "THE FLOOD" i have seen an entire town under 10 feet of water. But friday i saw people single and double wides turned over on their tops. Some blown away nothing but the frame left sitting in a ditch. Telephone poles ripped out of the ground. trees sitting completely out of the ground sitting on someones house. I felt so sad for these people. We you see this it really makes you stop and think. It makes you wonder even more when it is withing throwing distance from your house.
sorry for all of that. I am going now to find a radiator hose that will fit. I have the one the parts store lists for my truck but it is way to loose on the fittings????? is thier certain hoses for certain years and certain trucks?
Hoses should not be too hard to get. I'm not sure but I think my local guy told me the upper was NLA as a premolded unit? Generic flex was all he had. Not sure if this is true, or maybe he was not looking at the right place? My '67 has flex hose on it..and I wanted to put a molded one on. The lower was still available.
