Looking for ideas...my 05 6.0L F350 KR FX4 LWB has developed a noise. The engine sounds fine but the noise I hear is in addition to the engine and it sounds like a compressor or something, like maybe an air conditioner compressor, but when I turn the air off I still hear the sound. It is a steady "whine" for lack of any other way to describe it.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
When towing my 12,700 lb 5er up an 8% grade (8 miles), I shifted down to keep RPM at around 2700. When I let up off the accelerator, I got this Psshhhhhhhh sound (like an air compressor hose against a piece of wood). No loss of performance at all, just kept on towing, but if I lifted my foot off the accelerator, I would get the noise again. Eventually Check Engine Light came on. Still no loss of power or performance. This happened only under heavy load.
My turbo boost was around 20, EGT at 800, tranny at 180 degrees.
No loss of fluids, all hoses (especially turbo pipe (I used a sharpie pen before and outlined their position - no change).
I made an appointment for the dealer and hoping a code was set, but I can't figure it out.
Oh, of course, "Check Engine Light" goes off when I get to the dealer.
The truck ran perfectly, so I am really stumped as to what caused it. Tried to duplicate the sound unloaded - no dice.
Under heavy load, with my foot in it going up hill I would get a fan sound, but I understand that is normal. I wonder if that is what you heard.
chiefGReid, the noise you hear is normal. it happens because you are producing alot of boost, and then all of the sudden, the throttle is closed (or narrowed). the boost has to escape out somewhere, so it hisses into the intake manifold or backwards through the turbo and out the airfilter. (remember the turbo is an air compressor, so thats why it sounds that way)

Don't think that this is the case. I have towed worse grades with the trailer, i.e. Grapevine out of Southern California and never had this happen. In addition, Check Engine Light came on. I know the sound your talking about - and this ain't it.
was it the main radiato fan kicking on? were you towing at a slowER speed then normal (like 35-50 mph) where the radiator wasn't cooling fast enough, causing the temps to skyrocket, the fan kicks on and the check engine light comes on too? did you note the position of the engine temperature gauge in the dash?
ChiefG, it's not a fan sound and I've had my truck under heavy load a number of times thus far...but this sound happens pretty constantly, yet I've only noticed it for the last few weeks all told.
Kepler4, it might be the power steering pump, if so, does this mean perhaps the fluid is low or something? My truck is a 3/05 build and I got it as soon as it hit the dealer...so it's not "very old" yet. LOL. I really have just heard this sound in the last couple of weeks is all. Until then, just that sweet diesel purr.

Nope. Know the main radiato fan sound well. Speed was around 50. Engine temp was just a nudge below middle.
I just noticed the noise around 4,000 miles, I'ts at 4950 now. My truck is a 4/05 build. Guess I better check the fluid level too! It sounds just like the PS pump on my Bronco, I usually hear it at idle speeds or when 'coasting down' at slow speeds in city traffic.
