I have a 1997 4x4, 5.4, check engine light is on. I had it scanned with a Snap-on m2500 (I think), said bank 1 and bank 2 burning lean. I had run it real low on fuel so I had them reset it. Light came on again, same thing. Any thoughts of what it is? I don't feel like paying the dealership hundreds to replace a part that I can do myself.

If you perform a SEARCH on the actual code numbers (probably P0171 & P0174), you will find that this much discussed combination is usually due to a vacuum leak, most often due to the PCV hose or its fittings.
Hello, How are you? I was wondering if what that other person said about the PCV fittings, hose thing worked? My check engine lights comes on like after 4 hours of driving??? Any ideas? Thank you. Have a great day.

Take a can of brake clean and spray around vacuum hoses namley the pcv hose it goes into a port at the rear of the intake and the rubber fitting in the back likes to tear. You'll haer it when it sucks in the brake clean if it's a big leak if it's small then you'll hear a slight variation in engine speed, but run lean both banks almost always means that there is a vacuum leak. Oh yeah check for rodent damage on the hoses too, don't forget the ones near the brake booster! If your truck has sat up for a while or doesn't get driven much rodents like to make your engine bay dinner and home!

Have your computer scanned.
Without the actual codes, it is nearly impossible to troubleshoot the reason for a CEL.
Once you have the code(s), perform a SEARCH on them to see if there have been previous discussions about them. If you then need additional help, just ask.
Does your engine also idle real high. I had this problem with my truck and found that the PCV valve was bad. It was stuck open and allowing too much air to the engine. After i replaced it the problem never came back again.
When I first bought my truck in May of this year I had those codes come up, my vaccum system was fine so I changed the upstream o2 sensors and it cleared up the problem. ran better and got better gas milage as well.
I had those codes when the vacuum lines were bad on my truck. I replaced all of them before I got it quit throwing codes. My truck is a 97 & all the lines were bad. Its running like new now so I guess it was worth the time & money. The way Ford ran some of these lines causes them to fail due to heat IMO
