UPDATE! Now have put 2 quarts in in about 800 miles (since dealer oil change) and is still 1 quart low. No oil in or on engine (no recognizable leaks), changed fuel filter and fuel in canister was "straw colored" (not bluish or dark at all).
No smoke when accellerating.
I do tow about 9500 pounds when we go camping.
What is the PCV mod?

it is the ccv mod... the crankcase is vented directly into your intake tube preturbo on the driver's side if you have a nbs... all the "oilly mist" is funneled straight into your intake system where most of it condenses on your intake tubes, boots, and intercooler, and generally makes a mess... but... since nobody sees it, most people don't even think about it... this can be a cause of increased oil consumption, but i have never heard anyone claim that this causes the kind of oil consumption you are talking about...... if you are under 100k miles... you still have an engine warranty on your truck, and since you just bought it, i would take your truck back and tell the sales manager, (not the sales flunky that sold it to you), that if the service department can't fix the problem and explain what the problem was to your satisfaction then they can buy the truck back from you... and i would be serious about it...! this is NOT normal oil consumption, and i don't care what they tell you, it is NOT... if they can't fix it, and they won't buy it back... sue... i may be way off base here, but i don't think so.. and if there is a problem... make them buy it back...then NEVER go back to that "stealership" again..! sorry for the long post...

Racor makes the mod to the breather on the 7.3l powerstrokes there not cheep and has to serviced. It traps the oil and returns it back to the motor instead of the turbo sucking it up, but it has a filter that need to be changed. It's worth a try.

I installed the Racor CCV mod and like it. I've only driven about 8000 miles since the installation but have not had any problems. A friend of mine installed one a few years ago in his 2001 PSD and has not had to change the filter yet. The mod takes about one hour to do. I would recommend it.

Let me say again . . . I am diesel illiterate (sp?)!
Not truck illiterate, just never owned a diesel. Though I wished I had!
Anyway, I've noticed it takes a lot longer for the oil to settle before you can get an accurate reading on the dipstick. 10 - 15 minutes is not enough. I checked it at different intervals yesterday (all level ground) and it was low again. I let it sit overnight, and the level is almost to the full mark. Could I have been mis-reading the dipstick, put more oil in than I should, and it just blows out or burns off?!
I inspected the intake in front of turbo (CCV mod) and it is slightly oily, not at all moderate or excessive.

CCV mod on mine in pics for an example. Turn the exit manifold around 180 deg to rear, attach elbow that used to go to the intake plastic housing, add a coupling from NAPA and hose clamps and extension hose to exit. Mine is exiting around the spare tire area. Also a rubber cap from NAPA to seal off the intake plastic housing hole.
Hope this helps...

I believe that it says in the manual that you should let your truck sit for at least an hour before checking the oil. I usually wait for 2 hours before I check mine after I have run it.

Try this website. The Racor unit separates the oil from the vapor and puts the oil back into the engine. Its more expensive than the homemade rigs but it recycles everything, is cleaner, and is environmentally friendly. http://www.dieselinjection.com/racor.htm
