I need some advice on my 75 build-up. Right now I have a stock dana 44 front end with drum brakes and 36 inch tires. I need a disc brake conversion kit, new gears and carrier (locker), and probably stronger axles. The next tires I buy will be over 38 inches, so I probably will be pushing that dana 44 to or beyond its limits. Would it be better over the long run to go ahead and buy something like a Dynatrac dana 60, or spend the money on the 44 and keep my fingers crossed? I don't have the time or skills to pull from bone yards or fabricate stuff. Thanks for any input.
If you have the money to spend on a Dynatrac 60, then don't waste it trying to make the 44 live.
Rule of thumb is anything over 38" and even a "bulletproof" 44 isn't going to last. But, there's always exceptions to the rule. It depends on your driving style, vehicle weight, front weight, engine setback, terrain, and even LUCK.
With disc brakes, locker and stout axles and u joints, I have about $2K into my 44. Compared to the quote I got to have a Bronco width bare 60 housing made, I'm sticking with the 44 for now. If I find a deal on a complete 60, it will be narrowed along with the 14 bolt I have and bolted in.
