a/c clutch/compressor????

i started hearing this gawd awful racket yesterday coming from my a/c comp. she still works i.e. cold air.was wondering if it is the clutch or something else.also while driving it will blow cold air for about 10 minutes or so and then it quits and then will start up again with the cold air. at idle she will freeze you out but while driving its not as cold. what gives?

Moved to Cooling, Heating, Ventilation and A/C Forum. Should generate more responses on the problem.

Did you pop the hood, have a look and listen while the A/C was running? Betcha that would get you pretty close to the problem.

The fact that it cools when idling and not as well when driving could be because of the low pressure switch opening when suction pressure falls to below the switches set value which is probably at 25 or less indicating low freon charge. You draw suction pressure down and head pressure up more when driving as opposed to when idling since you are spinning the compressor faster. But as Ed stated in his post, you really need to pop the hood and see what is going on, preferably with a set of gauges on the AC system to monitor what is happening.
