AC Vent Wierdness
2003 Ford F-150 Lariat,
"Automatic" climate control.
The problem:
Air conditioner only blows out defroster vents no matter what position the controls are in.
Additional diagnostic info:
When switched to "vent", the blower blows (hot) air out the dash vents. I removed the control unit and applied vacuum to the various hoses. The black hose appears to be the vacuum source from the engine (20-23 inches vacuum with engine running). The other hoses appear to actuate the vent flaps. Only the red hose seems to do anything. When I draw a vacuum on the blue hose, the vents switch to both floor and defrost. IIRC, drawing a vacuum on the read hose switched to the dash vents. The yellow hose and the white hose don't seem to do anything when I draw a vacuum on them.
I've ordered a new control head, but it's on backorder from Ford with no ETA yet (the dealer has been searching for about 3 days to try to find one).
First Question:
Will replacing the control head fix the issue with the vents? I know there's something wrong with it because I can make some of the other combinations work with my vacuum pump pulling vacuum on some of the hoses. But I can't get "panel/floor" or just the floor vents no matter which hoses I draw vacuum on. So I'm thinking I might have other problems.
Second question:
Where can I get a new control unit?
Stick around someone will be by shortly to answer your question.
