1981. You shouldn't have to pull the crank to replace a one-piece seal, just the tranny and flywheel or flexplate, depending. Don't even have to drop the pan. It's easier to change than than a two-piece. -TD
On Edit: I just looked at your user profile, I see your 2 trucks listed are both pre-1981, so if it's one of those with the original engine, I guess you're outta luck...sorry! But it can still be done with the crank in place, you just have to drop the pan and remove the rear main cap, there is a little tool kit you can buy for just that purpose, it has a screw-hook thingie that you screw into the end of the upper seal half to pull it out. I bought one years ago, and then managed to use a small flat punch to very carefully push the upper half around to where I could get a grip on it and pull it out from there. Good luck, don't let it tick you off too much!

In the bronco, I took the lower end of an '85 302 out of a truck and put a carb. setup on it. Didn't even look at the seal, and now I have to pull the engine again. One of these times I might learn to do it right the first time.
Bummer...welcome to MY world! But, it's an '85 lower end, so it has the one-piece seal. Just pull the tranny/transfer case and you're there. Should be easier than pulling the motor, no? -TD
No, the tranny and tranfer have not been out and the engine has. I can have the cherry picker on the engine in an hour and a half. Practice, Practice, Practice.
Well, look at it this way...by the time you're done, you will truly be an expert at R&R'ing that motor! Amaze your friends! Astound your neighbors! Let me know when you get it down to 45 minutes! -TD
