Greetings one and all,
I have a 1998 F-150. The a/c control switch is stuck in the floor/def. mode. That is I can turn to any indicator position but it still blows out the floor/def area. Any ideas on how to fix it.
Is the switch itself stuck in that position and the **** is just spinning on the switch shaft? Or is the switch actually changing positions just not doing anything for the air flow? If it’s the first problem...you may just need a new ****. If it is the second, then it could be the switch itself is messed up internally and could just need a new switch, or there is a vacuum line that is either disconnected or broken. Also, check the vacuum block that is on the firewall on the passenger side right behind the battery. Someone else had a prob with the airflow and it turned out to be that block on the firewall. Do a search in this forum for AC. It was last week that it was posted. You may be able to scan back about 2 pages and find it. Here is what was posted back to me in an email about it.
"I guess it was the vacuum reservoir after all. It's weird though;
When we first replaced it, the problem was still there, but yesterday
when we took the wheelers out for a test ride for the upcoming trip, the
A/C worked like a charm. It never changed from vent to defrost one
time. Before, it would have changed as soon as you started up a hill with
a load on the truck. Maybe it hadn't had time to build up vacuum when
we first did it."

I just fixed the same problem. I had a broken plastic line behind the battery. It wouldn't show when it was sprayed with brake cleaner. I found it by using a mirror.
For safety reasons, the HVAC system defaults to defroster mode if the vacuum needed to operate the system isn't present.
thanks just this one stament made my day..i just got back in from checking the vacuum lines..and guess what there is was on backwards..the one in the firewall..ie no vacuum from motor..so always defrost,..
i had to replace the heater core..
1995 b3000(95 ranger) dam 8 hours later had it back together..
had to remove dash..to get at the core..
and if i didnt put the vac hose on backwards...was very worried but then read that..defaults to defrost..
great thanks a million..
