Lease vs Purchase

The objective of this poll is to see how many of you V10 boys either leased or purchased your vehicles. Wrench brought it to my attention, that, it would seem a lot of 6L guys are leasing. So I'm going to try and find out who does what.
Tell us about your decision, and if you stand by it or not.

Purchased at 36 months. I like to keep my equity. I drive too much anyway.

leases are rarely a good deal for the consumer. If it's the only way a guy can drive a $55,000 PSD F-350 I understand. But you can't alter the truck, you can't drive too many miles and the fine print has to be thoroughly inspected so you don't get that big surprise when you turn it in. A lease is a prolonged rental, that's it. For a business, that replaces their fleet every couple of years it can be a money saver depending on what the IRS will let you keep of their money.

Bought mine with 22k on the clock and 1 year old, Its now a bit over 2 years and I'm only at 27k on the ticker. I have a hard time "renting" a truck for $300+ per month. I figure I might as well pay the other $150s or so and actually own something in a few years. I also plan to keep mine until maybe 2010, we'll see if I can hold out. At well less than 10k per year It takes a long time to wear out a vehicle.

Guys/Gals,

My wife and I decided to purchase our 2002 EX...We figured we would drive it till she dies and the rate we put miles on her (27k) so far, the EX may out live us..LOL....Our is Ex is our second vehicle. I have a Co. Car that we drive most of the time around town in. We only really drive the Ex on long trips or trips that will get the drivetrain warmed up good and hot. I just hate paying the $750 payment every month. Only 17 more payments and she'll be mine. My wife and I are in our early 30's, so we figured this was the best option for us at this time in our life. The cost of cars really makes me sick..I pay almost as much for my house evry month as I do for this car. My parents and in laws just do not understand why we do some of the things we do. But with 2 kids, strollers, 2 100lb labs and all of the other stuff we need to haul around, we outgrew our 1998 Expy really quick...

BIg Rig....This is a great Poll....

I've done the lease thing already. Never again. Everyone I've talked to have leased once or so in their lifetime. But more often than not....everyone goes back to purchasing. I guess you have to experience turning you vehicle in and having $0 equity or have some dealership low ball the trade (it is very easy to find out the residual of a vehicle).

I ordered mine. I run 'em for approx 10 yrs / 200K miles so I definitely get my $$ worth. This vehicle is used for vacations, etc.

I always buy and it surprizes the heck out of me how dealerships can talk people into leasing just because their payments are 70 bucks a month less ( hypothetical example) for the lease. At the end of a lease agreement , you have diddly squat, at the end of a purchase agreement you have a paid-for vehicle.

PS, thanks Nick and you did a great job on this, Wrench.

Thats very cool. Both you and the 6L guys have voted 19 times. V10 is 100% purchase, while one 6L guy out of 19 leased, because he found a great deal, not to do with concerns over reliability.
Wrench, not a problem, this poll interested me as well.

Always buy my pickups. Never lease. Like Wrnctrvlr says, after making the same term of payments on a bank loan it is yours. Besides you can't take the depreciation on a lease, which can amount to a significant tax savings.

Bigger profits can do that, convince dealerships to talk people into leases. The dealership sells the car to the lease company, the lease company calculates what the used car will be worth at the end of the lease and that number that's left is what the consumer pays. Sometimes it's an advantage, like in the mid-late 90's when SUV's were hotter than a pepper sprout. The leasing co's thought the residual, or the end-of-term used value was going to be alot higher than it actually was once Detroit put SUV into overdrive and gas prices started skyrocketing. But don't feel too bad for the leasing co's, instead of billions they merely made hundreds of millions from their leases.

All my SuperDuty trucks (and every other personal vehicle for that matter) has been a purchase.

We explored the lease options for our mini fleet of 8 V10s and 2 PSDs but had to factor too much loss from abuse and misuse. Our business model for the trucks is based on throw away or zero trade value.

I sure wish I could factor my personal truck on the generous IRS depreciation schedules!

BTW we are in final negotiations for the sale of our start up company by a local defense contractor (point of our company was to sell it)

Looks like we will have beat the markets by about 14%

Turned over my logs and expense reports to their logistics manager and they are very impressed at my over **** attention to detail scheduled maintenance processes.

Good luck amigo, I got my fingers crossed for you. If you do sell, will that mean a V-10 powered T-bucket is in your immediate future ?

Nick, just checked the 6.0 PSD poll and we now have another lease so the leases are 10% PSD versus 0% V10s . It is odd that the 6.0 PSD thread have so few comments compared to the V10 group. I was expecting about 1/3 of 6.0 PSDs were leased so I am wrong at this point. We'll see what happens, Wrench.
