Question Clak

I just got a 73 Gran Torino with the cleveland and there is a clakking sound coming from the engine. i was thinking it may have been a rod cap letting go, but it seems to be more top-end. coming from the right bank (cyls 1-4), i was thinking maybe a bent pushod. i pulled the valve cover and the rockers arms were all okay, but i couldn't really tell the shape of the pushrods just a glance. i was also told it could be excess carbonation in the cylinder(s). it only starts at about 2500 rpm and kind of gets louder as the engine gets warm. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated....thanks

It's bearings, I've had experience there, the oil gets thinner as it gets warmer, that's why it gets louder.
Cleveland's were synonymous about depriving the bottom end at high RPM, so what you have is an engine that has seen some high reving, there is a way to prevent this from happening, but only a rebuild will help you. I'd say you'll need to have the crank turned, how far is unknown until it's on the machine.

well it turns out i was right. on the way home.....yeah......well it threw a rod. i think the rod cap let go and the piston went up and hit the valve which was down which pinched the pushrod and bent, because the valve is stuck and the pushrod is bent. the is a hole in the oil pan on one side and a large dent oppostie it. so after vacation, ill pull the motor and then the head(s). then go from there

Dang, haven't heard of that unless it's been rebuilt before, I'd say you may be looking for a long block, machining alone will be high and may not save it. Why would you drive it like that?

The one I bought started banging , I parked it quick, luckily I saved it, but machining killed me, had I thought about it, I'd have just bought a short block, it's the hidden machining costs that get ya. Engines cost too much to just abuse one, mine laid down because the previous owner was one of those, drive it like you stole it types, it catches up with you, so you aren't showing it who's boss when it's over.

well it turns out the rod sheared in half. then the piston positioned itsel so the crank counterweights were grinding on it. and the rod bearing was gone. in shreds in the case. i got a short block lined up $300 though so its okay.
