just took truck into dealer for re-flash, milage went down 3mpg, is this the latest flash you all said was so good pcm#307a-12a650fuf. now getting 12.5
drip on bell housing coming from 1.5" X 3" rubber stopper between bell housing and oil pan what is this and why does it leak oil.
just changed oil and put in 13 quarts aout 1/3 way up dip stick, just checked, oil, it is to tapered part on the top of stick, almost to metal rod. When this happened to you guy's was diesel smell strong? Is there any noticable when diesel is in oil.
Truck is a 350 crew cab, 6.0 engine build date 29 april 03
How long did you let the oil drain. I have found that a (quickie) change leaves a lot of oil in the engine. I leave mine for 30 minutes so as to get a good drain. If you did this and had this much rise take an oil sample and get it tested. This is the only sure way to tell. You might(?) smell the diesel fuel if you have a lot of fuel in the oil.
Our local oil distributer (kendall) has a program. Our Case farm equipment dealer has a kit I have used. Also try a auto parts store they might have one or a large truck dealership if your ford dealership doesn't have one.
From what you are telling us I would say that you have an injector leaking fuel into the crankcase. The 2003 engines had problems with early injectors leaking... among other things. The fuel smell and the oil level rising on the dipstick are the clues to look for and most of these trucks also exhibit a light misfire at idle or low RPM's. Can you tell I have repaired a few of these? And don't waste your money on an oil analysis. Your simple observations and knowing enough to ask questions is far more valuable! You will need to have your injectors checked for a leak.
On another note, you should be using almost a full 15 qts on an oil change. If you are not removing the oil filter cap BEFORE draining the oil you are leaving up to a quart of dirty oil behind.
WOW does that bring back memories--had a 12-13-02 production truck that was gorgeous and ran like a scalded ape til it got 10 injectors and a turbo and it's first reflash (had 6 inches of diesel on the dipstick). c-94 injectors and idled as quiet as a kitten purring--THOSE were the days.
My truck only takes 13.5 quarts to put it halfway up the dipstick (my '04). averages 17 city/hwy--rattles like a diesel and spanks dodges like newborn babies---pulls like a D-9 Cat and never looks back.
I do remove cap and filter before draining, and thanks for the info on the dip stick, but what about flash #, low milage and lastly:
When I first start truck in the morning with boat or RV hooked up, put truck in gear and rpm's go to 1100 and truck will not move. have to put in 4x4 to move it. Once it warms up, works fine. I think dealership hoped flash would do it.
I don't understand why putting the truck in 4X4 would help unless you are using 4X4 low. Sounds to me like a lack of power but it's not uncommon for diesels to be a little groggy when you first wake them up.
As far as defining calibrations goes there is little I can tell because Ford no longer tells us what each subsequent flash address anymore. That is a truly a shame because it makes us look uninformed to the people who want to know. Almost all 2003 owners experienced a fuel mileage loss from early flashes. Some have gotten a little back from the newest flashes. You also need to understand that all trucks do not receive the same flash or calibration. I'm sorry if that's not much help.
Hey Keith thanks for the reply, it is nice to have someone on fords side in the forum. To answer your question, I did have to use 4x4 low to move. Odd thing, never noticed it in the previous 25,000 miles.
I don't want to go against the Ford.docs recommendations, but for peace of mind, a $10-15 oil analysis is cheap. As for early injectors, my 03 was equiped with C-95 injectors. I had 10 or 12 of them replaced before ford bought the truck back. I will admit however, the truck ran spectacularly after each time they replaced the injectors. I was **** and had every flash installed on the truck. When I turned it in, the truck averaged 20-24 mpg unloaded if kept under 75 mph. Towing was a whole other story. By the way, did I mention it would run circles around my 05. Of course ford and the dealership tell me my expectations are "TO HIGH" My truck will not move my trailer now unless I start it in 4 lo. I need to rev the engine to about 2 grand and then all of a sudden the truck launches itself. But there is nothing wrong with this truck. My expectations are to high! With a good tail wind, I get about 15-16 mpg, average about 13-14. This is another "Winner" from ford.

My truck acted similarly when it had 20-30,000 miles- Then one day it no longer did that... Although I do have a cold engine protocol that I follow when I am towing: Always letting the engine warm-up for 5 minutes before I start towing especially when I am pulling the boat out of the water, up the ramp.
guess I only have 4,000 miles to go to get to 30K. Called dealer, they agree with the doctor, if oil level rises, it probably has bad injectors. Cant get an appointment until aug 1, so hope it does not ruin too much.
Anyone got an answer to the oil leak issue from the rubber thing on bell housing?
