Running hot!!!

My 93 f150 5.0 is running hot...temp guage never used to go over N, now it is at A when driving. I was checking the engine while it was idling and the top radiator hose is hotter than heck...the bottom one is virtually lukewarm???? Does this sound like the radiator is plugged? or is this normal? Tranny fluid is steaming hot too...

well, is it full on fluid first off. if so, is the thermo stuck? is the cap not holding pressure? is one of the lines colapsing while runninG?

yes, full of fluid and no collapsed hoses. I'm assuming the tstat is not stuck since the upper hose is under pressure and very very hot, while the bottom hose is not as pressurized and not very hot. The passenger side of the radiator is very very hot and the driver side is not???

cap is holding pressure since nothing is coming out of it.

Hello all,

I am having this exact same problem. On a normal, average temperature day, the temperature gauge is usually at the N or O on NORMAL. Over the last couple of weeks, (it has been around 100 degrees outside), the gauge has been reading at the M or A. Yesterday, I went to pick up some furniture and the Gauge got to the L right as I drove up. After we came out with the first load I noticed coolant everywhere. I thought for sure I had busted a hose or worse. After checking it over, could not find any leaks. My only guess is it came out the coolant fill tank? I think it has to do with my thermostat sticking. Does this sound correct? Thanks for your help in advance.
Thanks,
Matt

If you're having overheating problems, here are the first things you should try:

Replace the thermostat, replace the radiator cap, and flush and fill the cooling system. Autozone sells a prestone flush kit that goes into a heater hose. and you use it to flush the junk out of the block and radiator. If your waterpump has over 100,000 miles on it, replace it at the same time.

After you fill it, drive it around for a while and see if it still overheats.

Is it just me, or does Tim have a 'random post' function that pastes a standard reply on seemingly every 10th thread on this board?

good call, but I replaced the fan clutch already and it made no difference...and it is definately working right...I get that loud roar when starting up and it is engaging when hot.

Go to a car wash or find a pressure washer and wash the radiator fins out good.

You said one sides hot, an one sides not? sounds to me like a dirty radiator, Try the above, If that doesn't work then pull the bottom hose and drain the fluid, and flush the system good, refill with water and reflush it a few times with about 20 minutes of running between flushes.

sounds if you have a restriction somwhere. but if you think about
it the lower hose will be cooler because thats the water that has
already been cooled and is on its way back into the engine to do
its work at cooling

Makes sense, but the top hose is super hot...you can't even touch it, same with the top corner (by the upper hose) of the rad. the bottom corner and bottom hose are barely even warm.

Guy at work said he thinks its the tstat, but if that was the case wouldn't the temp of the hoses and radiator be closer (even though bottom would be cooler)? and wouldn't it just overheat instead of running hot and the tranny boiling over?

I dont know about that, but it still seems like somthing is restricting flow.

I would replace the thermostat at this point..they're cheap so it couldn't hurt. Good luck.
