Shift Linkage?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Dec-02 AT 05:32 AM (EST)]I have a 77 F100 three on the tree and I can hardly get it into 1st gear I have to slam it down so it slips into gear? I was told it was the shift linkage and that it can easily be adjusted? Is this right? if not how can I fix this problem?

Shift Linkage?

The linkage is easy to adjust on them. Put the truck in neutral and put the parking brake on or block the wheels. Get under there and you'll see where the shift linkage comes down, and the shift levers attach. Loosen the bolts on where they tighten in the slots so they can slide freely. Go back up and look under the hood. With the shifter in neutral you'll see a small hole in the 2 arms that come off the column. Slide a drill bit that fits snugly in these holes, which will also go in a notch between the arms. This will lock your shifter dead center in neutral. Just go back under the truck and tighten the two bolts, and your shifter is adjusted. You should also look at the plastic bushings where the linkage attaches to the shifter and arms on the transmission. If these have a lot of play you'll have to replace them to get it to work properly.
