I know the CPS (Cam position sensor) affects the Tach, but if your truck is running fine, then that doesn't seem to be the problem. CPS's are known for working or failing intermitantly. Other than that, could be a loose wire. Someone with more experience can shed more light.

My 96's tach would do the same thing once in a while, gave it a good rap with my knuckle and it must have secured a connection because it has worked ever since. Quickest fix I've done in a long time!
