a few direct performance questions

how much better is the msd ignition than the duraspark II? i have tfi now and i am getting rid of it and going to the non feedback carb. what are the benifits of port and polish on a 300? does it mess with the torque curve at all?

Well with msd ignition you probably won't notice a huge ammount of difference. Most people say that the only noticable difference is better throttle response.

Most people say that you shouldn't loose any low end power with a minor port & polish. You will gain some extra rpms. possibly up to about 4,500 depending on the ammount of porting work done.

I added a few num nums to my 300 in an 84 F150 4wd 4 speed. I added a set of EFI manifolds/ Walker downpipe, Cliffords 2300 Holley adapter plate, Holley 350 cfm 2bbl carb, K&N air filter, MSD Blaster TFI coil, 8.5mm wires, platinum plugs. That pretty much covers the external goodies I have added, I had the block punched .040 over, RV cam, HV oil pump, Clevite bearings, Sealed Power rings, it is running stock 8.5 to 1 pistons, stock crank and rods. Just my .02

P82, what effect did your mods have? Mileage? Power?

JimMorrison- i thought you were dead..?

bigbrown- mild porting and polishing should not detriment low end torque. It should improve your all around torque, and also allow the motor to continue making torque a bit higher in the rpms.

If you can afford the msd, get it.

Cheap, yet better option than running a duraspark II module and durasparkII distributor....get a HEI 4 pin module off a mid 70's GM 350 ($20 brand new), get a mid 90 f-150 tfi coil ($20 brand new) and use a duraspark II distributor...this does make a noticable difference in cold starts. There is a fella over on another inliners forum...he actually tested the gm module vs the duraspark II, he said the difference was very noticable. I converted my durapark II equipped truck to the gm module/ tfi coil...cold starts and idle improved big time. Whether it made a difference when driving is beyond me...who can feel 5-10 extra hp.

IMO, you can't go wrong though if you can afford the msd, I like it just as well and it less homemade looking than the HEI conversion, there are how toos on the net though if your interested.
