I AM in the general conversation room and anything goes as long as it's clean. The topic is, biggest engine ever.. so here goes.
Once a year I go to Rollag, Minnesota to see the Western Minnesota Steam Thresher's Reunion. To me, it's like a Meca for Motor Heads.. You know like Jewish people who go to the Holy City and kiss the wailing wall...
They specialize in steam powered tractors there,, but I like the side shows.. They have one cylinder engines there that are so huge, it's mind boggling.. I'm not kidding.. the one cylinder engines have fly wheels that are 20 feet across !!! And they run so smooth and quiet.. the only thing you hear is some clicking noise.. It could be the ignition system, or valves.. And this is 100 year old technology...
There is no alcohol allowed in Rollag on this weekend, safety reasons.... It's so relaxing,,, a great place to take the family
It cost's 8 dollars for an adult ticket, and everything else is free after that.. As long as I live up in this area, I will always go there once a year. And touch base at my Motor Head Mecca.. :=)
If anyone want's pictures of Rollag, I'll do my best to get them to you..

I read an article a few years back about an 814cin engine that Sonny Leonard at SAR bouilt up for a customer to race in IHRA's pro stock class. That's rather big!!! The limit for them, the pro stock dudes, is 817 I belive.
I think Caterpillar has some very big engines(16.0L), but if you want the biggest gas car engine, while CAT might also have a record for that. I remember reading about a V-22, that is a big engine.
Take a look at this [link:www.members.tripod.com/lyc_42/yore/gaa.htm|Ford aluminum V8]. Built for the Sherman tank used in WW2. Not exactly an engine you would find in a monster truck, but I thought it was cool.
I think that 572 used in monster trucks and other bad boy fords is probably a dove block, i think the biggest you can make a factory or ford motorsport iron block is 521 c.i. which is .110 thou oversize
Hey reroy...where are you from...I am in Fargo....I have always thought about going to that Rolag deal...havent made it yet...whats the date for this year?
The biggest true Ford engine I've seen is in my 8000 Ford farm tractor.(oh well). I can't remember the exact size or # off my head. A big L-6 diesel. It really has too much power for the tractor even though it's factory appl. Work it too hard and somethin's gonna break. And it wont be the engine.
The biggest engines I've worked on and instl. are EMD V20-645-E7's. 645 C.I.'s per cyl. 12,900 C.I.'s total. About 3500 H.P.
But can be turned up to approx. 4200 H.P. Maybe a little more.
The tallest would be the Fairbanks/Morris 10 cyl. Overhead pistons. About 9' tall. 10 cyl's, 20 pistons, 2 cranks. 2 pistons per cyl. 1 on top and 1 on bottom, working towards eachother. Has a verticle drive something like a differential to put it all in time. About 1600 H.P.
The turbo for the first or the blower for the last alone is about all a good 1ton truck wants at one time.
Hi Otto,
I've heard of thease old chuggers but never seen one. Are thease the ones with inspection holes in the case to visually watch the crank throws turning? They say yuo can count the revs as the crank turns.
