I killed it!!!! :(

Yep. I killed the '96 tonite. all cuz a STUPID mistake. I walked away from an open hood at a job site.

It was just me and the boss out in the middle of know where. so I decided to check some SCA level in the truck while he was digging. He jumps out yells at me to jump in the bobcat and I walked away from my truck, hood still open, he jump in, moves it and I totaly fergot the radiator cap was off.

So, 36 miles later I am totaly zoned out from a 13 hour day, and realize the engine temp lite is on, the gauge is at 220, and we got steam rolling out the side of the hood. jump out replace cap, keep driving. Mistake #1.

Mistake #2, drove right through town on the way home, 6 miles after the cap was replaced. one gas station, prolly 10 relatives houses, and numerous drainage ditches.

On the way home from town, 3.5 mile drive, temp gauge droppes to 160* and the engine temp lite is ON. we are gunna melt.

Get home, add water, all boils out. shut er down, add water again, barely restarts, knocking LOUD!!! quiets down after awhile, but the temp is right back to 220*. shut off, check oil, its empty, and covered in metal flakes. CCV is just a pouring out some white, nasty smoke. SO I am pretty sure I cooked out the rings, and prolly a head gasket.

Just venting, I just got home, happend half hour ago.

I think it's been a BAD day all over the place!

Wow man.......that really sucks. I hate to hear about things like that. But fatigue will do that to anybody. Sorry.
This next engine will be twice as good...you just wait and see.

You are not the first or the last guy to do that sort of thing. Hope you find a good used engine to put in. Check the wrecking yards; a good one will be able to search for a wrecked truck without engine damage in other yards besides his. Good that you have a weekend truck to fall back on while you search.
Good Luck

Well good news. I filled it with water before I left for work, it was all still there this afternoon when I got home. Filled it with oil, cuz it was 7 quarts low, and I JUST changed it not even 1K ago, so it wasnt low to start with. grabbed the key, hoped to god it wasn't hydrolocked. she cranked, fired and RAN!!!! took it down the road, it still makes 22 psi of boost, still moves pretty good, and the CCV wasn't speuwing. so I think it just got so hot that the rings quit sealing and burned all the oil out of it.

So I guess I will keep pounding it some more.

But I still am looking for a "spare" motor.

Sounds like she was just mad at ya' for abusing her like that.

At least you've got the 97 to fall back on, most of us would be stuck in a minivan or something if the Stroke went down.

That's great news. The best indicator is the CCV not belching. Looks like you dodged a bullet there.

that is truly amazing..! sounds like the new oil may have saved you..! i think i would do a couple of "short" changes on the oil... maybe change it after 1000 miles or so and see what it looks like coming out of the engine... if it's real black after 1k i would repeat that short change and check it again... new oil can do wonders in "cleaning out" an engine... jmho...
