Engine Swap Help
I'm looking at replacing my old 302 and have a lead on a 2000 4.6L from a Police Interceptor. I hope to bring the computer, A/C power steering pump, AC comp, tranny and everything else along for the swap, since my truck has none of these "amenities."
As 4.6 Mod Engine Buffs do you guys have any pro's or cons for such and engine & equiptment? I've heard the 99's and up are best to go with, as prior years have performance problems. I'm not looking to hot-rod the truck, just make it more enjoyable to drive, so does the difference matter?

Motor and tranny mounts. You'll need to fabricate something.
'99 and up are PI (Performance Improved). Not that '98 and early were problematic, just a little less gutsy. In '99 the Mustang went from 215 to 260HP or so, that's a big bump.
One thought, and not to deride modulars (I have THREE!), but have you thought about a crate 302? Or 347 (stroked 302)? Or a, gee, what's the stroked 351W? That, and throw a 4bbl Holley on it, and you're good to go.
Once you start this, you'll find all sorts of other expenses that you didn't think of when you started out. For example, if the motor costs $1000, make sure you have another $500 or even more to make sure it gets done

I would love to have a 347 for my LX Stang. By using the 347, you could use all of your current accesories and wouldn't have to do any modifying.

Well first off like said your motor mounts will have to be fabbed. Running all the EEC-6 wiring, tranny mod engines if I remember right have their own bellhousing, cooling system is diffrent too if I remember right. Just build/buy a 331 plenty of power but not crazy power and you wont have to fab/change anything.

I've done two of the 347 ford performance solutions motors in friends cars but they were both 1968 Mustangs. The one however was a fuel injected 5.0 motor. The 347 motors have a nice increase in torque. The 4.6L motors have weak bottom ends if you ever go forced induction but VT engines makes a stroker for them as well.

I can't seem to find dimensions on a 5.4. I know the 4.6 will fit under the hood, and with little complications.
On top of that, I can find more 4.6's around here, than 5.4's, they're cheaper, and I can get all the extras at a good price, and in one feld swoop.
My minds not made up though, it's just more than a simple engine swap...lot of other things I want to do at the same time, and package deals are always better than mix and match when it comes to price and compatability.
