97 F250 transfer case stuck...help!!

97 F250 transfer case stuck...help!!

Just used my 97 diesel to pull a large load of hay out of a field up a ditch and onto the road. I put the truck in 4 low and locked up the hubs so I wouldn't spin. I made in on the road and shifted back into 2 wheel drive and unlocked the hubs. I drove home and went to use 4 low again, would not shift past 4 hi even into neutral. I played around and finally got it into 4 lo, then I could not get it back again into nuetral or 4 hi or 2wd again. The next day I did manage to very stiffly get it into 2wd again after the truck was cold. Truck has very low miles and is very rarely run in 4x4. Buddy of mine says a stretched chain can keep the case from shifting properly, local shops says it can't be the chain and want to sell me a rebuilt case. I can't see it being a major problem. Runs without noise in 4 low or hi and 2wd, just the shifting is messed up. Linkage is not binding and is well lubricated. 2wd to 4 hi is as smooth as ever. Any help would be appreciated, right now I am contemplating pulling the rear cover off the case and having a look.

What trans? and you say you put in 4lo then locked the hubs?

5 speed trans. hubs were locked and in 4 lo

I'd play with it when parked, engine off. If it's difficult to get in/out of 4Lo, then you could have a bent shift fork. (Somebody before you might have gotten mean with it). Key is, once the gear teeth are all lined up you shouldn't have problem switching ratio's. When things are spinning, it's a bit different because none these gears are synchronized. But try it static. If you still have difficulties, then yes it could be a chain but I'd suspect a bent shift fork if your truck does have low miles.
