Hot engine noise????

Well I am new to this so please nobody laugh! I have a 1988 sull size Ford Bronco with a 302. Over 150,000 miles. I drove to town the other day, which is a 40 mile trip one way, bronco ran fine. It was running a little hotter than normal but did not overheat. when I pulled up to open my gate I noticed a jack hammer type sound coming from the engine. I shut it off and started it up the next day and no noise. I have driven around where I live and no noise but now I am afraid to drive long distances. Oil is ok, and its been maintained pretty good. Help as I am a mom of 3 boys and we live in the middle of no where. Is is major or something minor that I have to watch for. I can do some work on my own ride. Thanks

get a haynes manual on your rig. I have the same year bronco but swapped to a different motor. you might just have a bad exhaust leak from a cracked manifold which is very common. the oil pressure gauge on your rig is not a real gauge so dont trust it. i suggest you or someone you know install a mechanical oil pressure gauge this way you know exactly what the pressure is.
What grade oil are you using? 10-40?

i hate those types of issues. it might have been some detonation from possible bad gas or something? whats your timing set at?

I know it isn't from the same vehicle, but I had a 78 Bronco with the same motor, and the last time i heard that, I threw a rod through the block and left her at a junk yard in Utah, (driving to Colorado). Not trying to scare you or anything, but take a little longer trips each time and listen carefully with the window down. If the noise starts back up, shut her down, let it cool then head home. Could be that the oil pump is not pulling what it should and needs replacing or it could be that the oil is breaking down faster with the heat so its not lubricating right. Just don't run it when it is knocking like that....you will definately be stranded if it goes. From what you described, it is the rods knocking against the lifters. they shouldn't have enough slack to do that. With the manual though, you can go through and check the slack on the lifters to see if it is within tolerances. All you have to remove is the valve covers.
Good luck!
