I'm trying to decide between the Goodyear MTR and the BF Goodrich Mud Terrain. Once, I had to have new 285/75/16 MTRs removed because they could not be balanced effectively. The tire shop said that my stock steel wheels were too heavy and amplified the road force of the tire imperfections. I now have a new F250 with 17 inch stock wheels. Which is the better balancing mudder out of the two brands? Thanks.
I've used both of those tires and have never heard of balancing problems with either, espescially not at that size. It's possible you got a bad run of tires, or the shop trying to balance them wasn't qualified. I personally don't think you could go wrong buying either one. In this case I say go with whichever you think looks better. Performance wise they're pretty much equal.
I had problems with my MTR's as well (305/70/16). Same thing with the road force variation, the tires would never balance. And I had them done 5 times at different shops, including the a truck / RV shop that usually does large tires.
At 45+ they would shake the truck so bad, you couldn't tell what kind of car was behind you in the mirror.
Goodyear MTRs are not mud tires. MTR means Maximum Traction or something along those lines. I have run them both. I liked the BFGs Mudders better for the road and in the dirt. The MTRs are better on rocks. I am currently running SSRs and like them. I have had three sets of SSRs and two sets on BFG Mudders. Not much on road difference. I had 37x12.50r17s BFGs on my old Dodge Ram. Also had 37 BFGs and 37 SSRs on a Jeep. had 31 MTRs on the Jeep. Never had trouble balancing any of them. My current SSRs have taken the most weight to balance out of them all though.
Overall, my choice would be BFG, I would have them on now if they had the size I am running right now. I wouldn't leave out the Toyos either. Rode in DCSpecial's rig and they rode nicely. He backs them up too.
OK, I did not tell it right in the first post. Now, I remember. I was told by the tire shop, which happens to be a large chain, that the heavier steel wheels, that I had at the time, were amplifying imperfections in the roundness of the Goodyear MTRs. They claimed that mud tires, in general, are not produced as precisely as other tires in that regard. They would zero out on the road-force machine and spin balancer but would act out as imbalanced tires, they said, because they were slightly out-of-round. According to the store, out-of-round is considered "normal" in mudders. I want muds but don't want the steering wheel shake of the Goodyear MTRs that I tried. Was the store blowing smoke?
I had 31-10.50 MTR's that lasted 40K on my Bronco. Rode fine up to 80mph, very smooth, great on pavement. They were poor in mud however, just couldn't spin the mud out of the lugs. They weren't that great in loose dirt either. I believe, as stated in an earlier post, that they are designed primarily for rock crawling.
I have 31-10.50 BFG Mud Terrains now. Have about 10K on them and they ride just as nice on pavement but don't handle fast corners quite as well. Far better in mud and loose dirt though! In muddy places, where the MTR's would load up and slip around, the BFG's just spit out mud and go. They are also better in loose dirt and hill climbs. The better all around choice for me.
I have had a couple sets of both the BFG and MTR's in 33 and 35 sizes and have never had any issues with either. I prefer the BFG's. Maybe because the goodyear dealer pissed me off. They are both great tires though. Sounds like the tire shop could be lacking some experience or you just got some bad tires, unless your wheels are bent (been there done that). The only time I have had balancing issues is with 33/15.50 Super Swampers or Mickey T's 33/14.50 Bajas. This is normal with bias ply tires though. An experienced shop can rotate your tires on your wheels and compensate for some imbalance/wheel bent situations. Just my 2 cents worth of experience
Same experience with the MTR's. Had them balanced 5 times and shaved to correct the "out of round" problem and within 1000 miles they were terrible again. I eventually had them returned to GY for a full refund because they were jacked up from the get go.
I've had 2 sets of the BFG muds and had no problems at all with them. They rode fine and wore very well.
In college I worked for a local tire shop.. I think I did more flat repairs on Goodyear tires than any other tire... my friend had them on his Dodge All 4 tires had patches in them a on had 2....BFG's all the way..
BFG muds have great longevity too. I had two sets of 35's on my last truck back to back and they lasted over 50K miles each set. You can't beat that with any other mudder.
I've had them both too. Tread design, quietness comparison, pavement traction wet or dry, loose roadway. BFG wins. And comparing the load rating, they should be pretty much equal, but there's a big difference in sidewall flex with the Good Year.
Well I will tell ya-
I just had my 37x12.50x17 BFG Mud's mounted on Extreme pro comp 1059's and what an awsome looking tire, I can't wait to get them on. Lift kit going in this weekend(Hopefully)
I will update when I get them on the truck
I had Goodyear mtr on my last truck and I didnt like them nearly as well as the BFG muds that were on it. The Goodyears are much louder and I dont think last nearly as long.
