will a 427 fit

1973 F250, Camper Special, 390, C6, 2wd, not sure on rear ratio.

i was wondering if a 427 will drop in a F250 camper special 2wd that currently has a 390? would it be cost effective to build up the 427 or should i put the money in the 390?

you will have to have towers from a 460 and a trans as well. The 390's can do pretty good themselves, likely to rival the 427, both on power and efficiency... as much as there is from these big motors.

A 427 and a 390 are externally the same engine, as is a 428. You're not mistaking a 429 here are you. The 429 is externally the same as a 460 and would require the 460 mounts and tranny.

a 427 engine will run you about 13,000 to buy and build. a bare 427 block goes for 5,000.00 i would stick with the 390 or build a 428.

It is a bolt in swap. If you already have the engine go for it. For the money you would spend building a 427 from scratch, you could have a really mean 390 or 428. The reason that 427s are so expensive is 2 fold. 1. They were produced in lower numbers than most other FE blocks and mostly used for racing. Some did make it into T-birds and such. and 2. It's the big engine that Carroll Shelby put in his Cobra (the English bodied roadster, not the Mustang). So all the Cobra fanatics drive the price up. It was built to be a high RPM, high horsepower motor, so it might be better suited to car applications than trucks. But if you put one in a truck I bet it would be fun!

If you are referring to the FE version of the 427, then it is externally the same as the 390 so it will drop right in. I believe you would need to internally balance it however to work with your 390 flywheel/flexplate combo you decide to go with. Now if you are talking a stroked 351w to 427CI, then you will need the engine towers and mounts from a small block powered truck, as well as a trans to go with it.

Mike G what other version of the 427 is there???? Also this swap will be straight up unless your 427 has some crazy heads on it, exhaust manifolds/headers may not bolt up. Also $5k for a 427 side oiler perhaps, but he doesnt need the side oiler a regular 427 block would be just fine in his application. I have seen them for much less....

ZW, Mike said it in his post "stroked version of the 351W". Sometimes this is what people are referring to when they mention a 427 Ford today.
