Rear Diff. Oil.

Im getting ready to change my rear diff. gear oil in my 00 F350 7.3 and was wondering the capacity (quarts of oil) and what is the best oil to use, non synthetic type.
Thanks for any replies.

Should be in the owner's manual.

Is it a DRW or SRW?

If you have the 10.5 it holds 6.9 pints.
Dana 80 holds 8.3 pints.

75W140 SAE Synthetic

wgw,

Definitely consult your owner's manual. Should be something in there about a "friction modifier" (ie, additive) that is required of the rear gear oil. There should be a metal tag on your rear differential that will tell you what weight gear oil to use.

I used Royal Purple in my rear differential (75/140 weight). That's for a 2002 F-250 2WD 5.4L gasser, though. It already has the friction modiifier in it. Other brands are Red Line and Amsoil.

Assuming he has a limited-slip, sure, add friction-modifier, but if he doesn't, well, it's not necessary.

nailed it. I pulled mine off to put a different cover on and it had mineral oil in it, as well as too much water for my liking. Glad I changed it out when I did, also cleaned the vent in wich was plugged.
