l have a 97 ford explorer with a 302 in it with 170k on it. It got hot when i got a leak in the radiatior. i put a new radiatior in it and started drivin it and i am getting oil in the radiatior pretty bad. It still has lots of power but i know that the heads or head gaskets are messed up. i was wordering how hard it is to remove the heads and fix it i am pretty good with workin on motors but i have never done this on something this new. any advice would be appriciated. Thanks!
The 302's were packed into the Explorer. You can pull the heads off in the truck, but it is almost as easy to pull the entire block as just the heads. Have you ran a compression test to see where you stand?
Alright i never did check commpression which is stupid of me. but i started pulling heads the other day and i got the drivers side head off today. to me i think it looks fine but i have never messed with heads alot. I was wondering if i should send them off to a machine shop. i will be pulling pass head off tommorow. i was also thinking what is the chance of the heads being warped or the block being cracked.
If you are going to pull the heads and are not very familiar with what to look for, I would get the passenger head off and stop by a machine shop and have them check them out. Won't hurt anything if nothing is wrong, but might save a problem in the future...
Checking the block will be a little different. You will really have to check that out with a good physical inspection of all the pistons, side walls, oil pan and gaskets, etc. I would also look at the lower intake very closely. See if you have any places in it that are cracked, warped, etc.
