U-joints slight play

U-joints slight play
OK, on the truck in my signature below, I had it in three months and 2400 miles ago for a rear U-joint. They checked the others and said they were fine. This is a reputable shop I have been going to for several years with no problems. Now I see play in them. What gives? Can they go that quickly. It is not a lot of play, just a little wiggle. Anyway, do I have time to get to this or should I be rushing off to the shop immediately. I do drive it with vigor, sometimes stomping the pedal in first gear just for the fun of the lurch and other fun stuff like that, but never outright abuse like dumping the clutch.

Well, everything I read said to change the u-joints if there is ANY movement at all. I saw movement. The shop (and this is a very good shop) did not find any play. They checked it on the bench. I called and was told no play and that maybe I saw end play in the sockets as some will do that. I said I saw play while laying under the truck and twisting (or was I pushing sideways). He went under the truck and tested it that way and said he found no play again. He said if it were his truck he would not change them. So I left them alone. Got some other work done so it was not a wasted trip anyway.

The pinion is good. It's a mystery to me, but I will take his word for it at this time. If I get a chance I will try to get someone else to crawl under and give it a twist.
