What was once an acceptable oil drip has become a full blown smoke screen when I get to operating temps on the road. I believe my rear main has a good leak but there's also a hint of coolant in there as well and I have just replace gasket to thermostat housing.
My question is, since I'm already in need of a pretty costly gasket replacement due to labor, should I consider having tranny work while they're in there? I've had problems with shifting a couple years ago when in North Dakota that may have been due to the cold, but the problem has "gone away." I'd hate to have all my leaks fixed only to have the transmission act up again next year.
Any recommendations and what kind of money am I looking to lose either way? If I just go with the fix I'm guessing $500-$700? Complete transmission ... $1500-$2000? These are just quotes I've seen, I have an appt this week to survey the damage.
those quotes are about right. that tranny quote is for the tranny only though not labor unless you plan on doing the work yourself you could save lots of money especially if you did the gasket work yourself. its not hard
