Hello, this is one of the times that if I can get my wiring fixed because someone actually online can help that would just be another reason the internet kicks Edited out by Admin
I'm about to flip out not being able to fix a problem. I bought my first Ford ever yesterday (2000 F150 XLT 4x4). It came with a six pin plug hook up for trailers. My daily work trailer is a four pin horizontal hook up so I wanted to either find an adapter or splice in the proper hook up. While trying to figure out which wires did what on the stock round 6pin hook up the only hot wire was tailights.......no stop Lturn or Rturn signals. I followed from the 6pins up to where it had been spliced to the main wires that ran to both sides of the back lights. I followed that until I found a connection were I was able to unplug it and test from that connection......I found power to LT and RT and stop.......but completely lost tailights on my truck...I checked the fuse chart in the manual and for the life of me I can tell what fuse it should be. I does say anything like (parking lights, running lights,) So I unpluged and visually inspected every fuse there was. So now I can't drive at night cause I got no tailights. I was able to splice in the trailer lights to RT, LT and stop. Just enought to be able to drive and work in daylight hours. But I lost tailights and now the dash illumination..........I'm freakin...............can the wires at the back of the truck affect the illumination on the dash.......starting to miss my Chevy. HELP.

I would have changed the the trailer plug to 6 pin, unless other people use it then I would make up a pigtail with 6 pin at one end and 4 pin at the other.
From the sound of it, it sounds that you had towing package on this truck. The lights run to a different circuit for towing pacage. I would suggest first disconnecting any splices you made in the rear. There is a mistake somewhere backthere. Even put the wiring back to where it was. The fuses and relays for towing are under the hood.
The reason for your illumination light going "weird" is because its the same circuit as your running lights. Fuse #4, but it doesn't sound like its blown yet. Check around your work in the back. Pay particuliar attention to a Brown wire, this would be "running lights" circuit.
I'm not sure what pigtails are except what I put my daughters hair in. So there are fuses under the dash and under the hood? Also does the towing package come with that six plug? It apears to be spliced into the taillights wiring. While just checking to see if wires were hot is when we lost the only wire that was hot on the 6plug and that was the brown tail lights. I spliced in that 4 plug in front of the stock splice after the taillights were lost. Nothing changed when I spliced in that 4 pin other than I have trailer lights with the exception of the running lights. should I unsplice the entire 6plug that came with the truck or is there a possible fuse under the hood for running lights that might have blown. As far as the illumination...and dimmer...its out but I can turn the cab light on when I turn the dimmer switch all the way up. Whats that indicate.....I really appreciate your help...........Anthony(Matuka)

"Pigtail" is like an adapter. 6pin connection at one end and 4pin at the other. One end plugs into the 6pin on the truck and the other plugs in to 4pin trailer. usually its "home made".
You may have blown the fuse if lights where on when testing. I am pretty sure its #4 in fuse block under the dash.
Yes there are fuses under the hood. If the 6pin is factory harness, the fuses will be under the hood.
Don't unsplice anything until you change that fuse. I didn't realize you spliced after it had already blown the fuse.

You said you followed the 6 pin up and it was spliced into the rear lighting harness. This is a sign that your truck does not have a towing package, and the 6 pin was added later on. This is not a big deal as far as correct operation, but it is a big deal to find this out because it will affect how you troubleshoot. If your truck did have a towing package, and they were using it with the 6 pin, then most all the 6 pin wiring for the trailer would go all the way up front to it's own set of fuses and relays under the hood.
So, if we assume that it was spliced in the trucks lighting circuits, then we need to check the truck's fuses and ignore any possible trailer fuses(if I am going down the wrong trail, and it is using the factory trailer harness, then ignore this post).
The fuse you need to be concerned with as far as the running lamps on the truck is fuse #6 in the fuse box under the hood, which is a 15 amp.
Franklin is still correct, most important part to know/find out is if the truck indeed has a tow package or not. I concure with franklin by the above post that it doesn't have the factory tow package. If you drop the spare tire, tucked up on the frame rail pretty much above the axle will be the connectory for the tow package, if there is a tow pack present. Out of the connector on the wire side going toward the front, there will be a ground wire connecting to the frame at that point. Wire is about 12 to 10 gauge, should be white as well. If this connector is not there, then you indeed do not have the tow package option on the truck.
