I have a 1978 f150 and it looks as if there was no factory speakers in the doors. For one there is no wire holes in the edge of the door for speaker wire. Another thing that led me to believe that there was no speakers was the grill in the door panel is broke just enough that you can tell there is no speakers behind them?? My question is are there holes in the door for speakers? I have another 78 that has these speakers located there. If there isn't any holes in the doors where is a good location for the speakers they are pioneer's 5 1/4" I can't think of any other good place to locate the speakers than in the doors. I've seen speakers mounted in the headliners before but I really don't want to have to cut my headliner all up. I know it isn't that hard to take the door panels off to check this but I didn't want to risk cracking my panels just to find out that there is no holes as they are in good condition except for the minor split by the one speaker grill. Thanks everyone who responds to this.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-02 AT 11:34 PM (EST)]1) Yes - the door panels were designed for speakers - just take care in removing your panels - patience saves time and money. You can have a look in my galley (click on truck pic on left) and look at my Blue 79 parts truck - you can see a picture of the inside of a door there. You will need to punch (drill) out the holes (you will see on the door jam the pre-determined manufacture's position) for the wires and get some rubber grommets. You can also get a modern invention that does not require wires running in the door-jam - it is like a contact to contact thingy (sorry forget the name at this point in time) but your speakers won't work with the doors open.
2) Another place is behind your seat - run wires under carpet from dash to rear of seat - you will note holes in carpet which allow wires to go through at back of seat. You can buy pre-fab 6X9 boxes which will fit in perfectly or you can build a custom enclosure.
Hope this answers your questions and prohibits any ugly mods - ie cutting head liner.
Cheers!
Keep it Rubber Side Down!
the 6 1/2's don't have to be slimline. any standard aftermarket 6 1/2" speaker will fit, you just have to drill holes for the screws, and wires.. no big deal, i've got pioneer 6 1/2, 1" tweets on the dash, and a cerwinvega 12" dvc behind the seat.. also running a d-2500 cd deck, and a gmh-44 4 channel amp
