I can see the job loss being an issue. But then again it would be a gradual change.

My mom worked in a cafeteria/snackbar in a hospital (retired now) she did not know how to pump gas to begin with, and was worried she would smell like gas at work if she tried. I would take her to get gas for her, but a local station (self serve) will have the attendants to fill the car up for all women and elderly men. You don't even have to ask, they watch for customers. The gas there is the same price as anywhere else around here. ( state of virginia )

My wife is the manager of a 'convience store-gas station' like a Stop -n- Rob. In IL, they have to come out and pump the gas for anyone that specifically requests it. If there is only one person on duty in the station, they can refuse, but they have to fill out these stupid ADA forms because of it. I know that she will come out when she is alone and pump for 'actual' disabled people. We have alot of 'fakers' here, people too fat or lazy to do anything for themselves claiming to be disabled.

There is one full service station here in the town where I live in N MS. The price is the same as the self-serve stations too. They also have a service bay and I often see them changing oil and such there.
The station is on the town square across from the court house so it makes it handy to have it there I guess.

there is a flying J truck stop near my house with the lowest prices in the area. that's because we are near the Ontario border so they have to be competitive to get the truckers business. across the way there is a local gas station with the same price. because he''s usually about 10 cents/litre cheaper than montreal he does a huge business. always a big lineup. so he does full service. you pull up, just shout full/regular at him and he starts to fill you. no oil checks or windshields. just the cheapest gas and hurry up and get out of there for the next guy. you can pump your own gas. i usually do if its busy and the attendent can't get to me right away.

FULL service, they pump gas that's all. Some stations post signs stating they don't check oil. In the last three years I've had my windshield cleaned once, he was bored that there wasn't more cars. As for losing jobs, the foriegners can find something else to do.

Yeah NJ and Oregon are two states where the public is considered too stupid to pump their own gas. Don't know about NJ, but Oregon has pretty expensive gas, and at least for me it is a PITA to have to wait for somebody to come over and pump for me while I wait for them to take care of 5-6 other cars who may or may not have been ahead of me.

My wife actually likes the service since it means she doesn't have to get out and fill the tank, especially while it is raining, guess she has a point there.

I prefer to do it myself since I know I will wipe up any spills and it gives me an opportunity to give the vehicle a once over inspection to make sure nothing is falling off etc.

In Oregon the initiative to change to self serv has failed numerous times. I guess there is a hardocre base of old people who like it and there are a lot of guys with a job who otherwise might not have anything else to do. But I always hated paying maybe 20 cents more in Oregon versus Washington(just 2 miles across the river) where you could pump it yourself.

BTW I have seen a few videos of gas fires and yes indeed, you can have a static spark cause your tank to catch fire. I think the advice was to put the cap back on which would smother it, but then there are people who would panic and do the wrong thing or nothing.

Just my opinion,

Jim Henderson

i was going through british columbia to alberta and stopped for gas. The stupid pump didnt have the lock so you could start it goin and check your oil- so i pulled up to the next one. same thing, so i stood there and held the nozzle till it was full. asked the attendant about it and she said "its a new law- dont want people to wander away while it filling in case it spills." How dumb is THAT! Alberta gives tax breaks to stations that are full service because they are "creating jobs and lowering the unemployement rate".

I keep a piece of scrap wood in my truck bed that I can wedge into those annoying pump handles where the lock has broken or been removed..

As far as self serve in NJ, friends that live there have always told me it was a jobs issue..

Better than a piece of wood to hold the pump handle...

Just use your chapstick. Most of us carry something like that and it fits just right on 90% of the pumps I have tried. Only problem is when the pump snaps off, sometimes the chapstick pops out and rolls.

The funny thing about the law here in Oregon, if you actually read the reasons why they prohibit "ordinary people" from dispensing gasoline you'll get quite a chuckle. At least I did. A couple examples from ORS 480.315;

4) The dangers of crime and slick surfaces described in subsection (3) of this section are enhanced because Oregon’s weather is uniquely adverse, causing wet pavement and reduced visibility;

6) Attempts by other states to require the providing of aid to senior citizens and the disabled in the self-service dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids at retail have failed, and therefore, senior citizens and the disabled must pay the higher costs of full service;

10(a) Discriminates against customers with lower incomes, who are under greater economic pressure to subject themselves to the inconvenience and hazards of self-service;

(11) The increased use of self-service at retail in other states has contributed to diminishing the availability of automotive repair facilities at gasoline stations;
(Who really takes their car to a Gas station for service anymore?)

(17) Small children left unattended when customers leave to make payment at retail self-service stations creates a dangerous situation. (huh, and going inside to pay at a full-service establishment is any different?)

Also, they have an exemption from the rule for motorcycles, and diesel doesn't count as a class 1 flamable liquid so it's ok to self-serve. Kinda hypocritical if you ask me.

The only argument for Oregon's self-serve law that I've seen is that prices in states that went to self-serve actually went up after a brief dip upon passage of the law. Annoys me to pay Cali prices for the stuff and have to mess with it on top of the gouging.

no full service around here and at sunset the doors at the snack shop locks up so you have to know what you want and the guy drops it down the chute after you slide the money into the slot in the bulletproof glass.
