Alright, I looked at a 1991 Ford F350 4x4, and when engaged in 4 wheel drive with the hubs locked, it made a growling sound, and almost sounded like something hitting the bottom of the cab (nothing was hitting.) The sound only occured during sharper turns, is this normal?
Oh yeah, also, I called a Ford dealer, and he said it was the fact that the hubs locked the wheels to be going the same speed, and when turning the outside one had to go a lot further, but because they were locked, it made that sound. I was in a field by the way, on slightly hard packed dirt with a small layer of sand on top.
yea, um the thing with the dealer, thats why trucks have a open front diff. during sharpp turns, id bet that your tire are hittin your radius arms.i now that my 88 with 31 hits the arms.
Yes, and no. I was getting impatient because 26 people had viewed it, and no one had commented. I am not buying it from a dealer, I am buying it from an individual, I called the dealer on the issue, and that is what they said.
It only happens in 4wd HI, and 4wd Low, not in 2wd. I was in a field, but it was not wet, could the wheels have not had enough slippage, and caused the clunking sound? It only happens on turns.
what size tires are on it?? if they are to big they will hit on a full lock turn. also try driving it with the transfer case in 4x4, but with the hubs unlocked.it sounds like there may be a bad ujoint somewhere, or tire rub.
