HELP...93 150 erratic operation!!!

Howdy guys, I got's me a big problem . I have a 93 150 4x4 with a 302 and a AOD tranny. My problem is that the truck will behave very erratically. It started a few weeks back, when I would go down the highway the truck would start to buck and jerk. It was minimal at first but has grown increasingly worse.

About two weeks ago I went to get in it for work and it would crank over but not start. It would act like it wanted to start but it did not. While I was cranking it over it was emitting a cloud of smoke out the exhaust. Also it would start out by cranking fast and then just slow down and then crank fast again, all without letting off the key.

I took it to the garage, but when it was loaded to go it started right up like nobodys busines and ran fine. That was early afternoon of the same day that it did not start.

The garage could not find anything wrong and only changed the fuel filter on it. I thought maybe they had it cause it worked for about 3 days, but then it started acting up again.

Last saturday it started very hard this way but I got it going. I drove it about two-three miles thru town with it running very bad and stopped at a red light where it promptly shut off in the middle of the intersection when I tried to give it the gas to go. I got it to restart and after driving about another two miles it started to run fine. In fact till I got where I was going it was running excellent.

This past week it has acted up everyday. The bucking problem has gotten very bad to the point you have to floorboard it to downshift from overdrive or drive to get it to go without bucking. There is a redlight I have to stop at everyday about three miles from my home and when I go to pull away from that light the truck acts like it wants to shutoff. I have to apply the gas lightly and the truck hesitates and sounds like it is missing, plus it sounds like it pings as well.

I don't know if it means anything, but it seems worse in the morning when I first start it. In the afternoon when I leave work it usually doesn't do it as bad.

I am just frustrated to no end with it. I can't seem to get this figured out. My mechanic said that there is a sensor, I believe he called it a PIP sensor that has to do with the distributor that could be bad. He said they are notorious for failing, but I don't know. The check engine light doesnt come on when it happens.

Any ideas as to what I can look at? I have a fault code checker, but I must be an idiot cause I can't figure out the number of blinks properly.

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys
