Buildin' Up my I6

Since i put on the exhaust i've been on a quest for power, go figure, i though i had a fast truck for the track but, now i want this one to be fast while i build the other one.

So here is what i want: a truck that hauls like an SOB.
Power range Idle-3500 or 4k. I still want that flat torque curve fromm 1k-2500 like stock. I want every thing down low.

Here is what i've thought of:
Offy DP
Crane Truck power Cam 260H, idle-4500rpm.
EFI split manifolds
EFI head (is it worth it or is a 240 head better?)
MSD Ignition.

I'm still open on carb options, Holley 390?Edel450?, 2BBL.

How much power increase should i make??

I probally won't do this till i get my IDI but i want to plan ahead.

Thanks

DT

Naw, gotta get my hands on another one. My neighbor moved away thus ended the tinkering he let me and his son do on his old IH tank trucks. We used to race them mine always won because his was a slushbox and a 180horse, vs, my 240 horse. I still drive some in the fall during harvesting season. I want an old IH K series tandem from the 40-50's and put a DT in there.

I just read a post on this forum saying the EFI head doesn't flow as well as the older carb head.

Well scrap that then. I might get a 240 head to bump compression a bit. Is it worth going with 1.7 rockers if i get a cam?

I'd highly recommend going with a cam. The longer I run my Comp Cams 268H the more I come to appreciate it.

I'm still drawing enough vacuum to run my power brakes with the 268H, it has a very nice lope and with my 5 speed manual I can launch the truck in it's power band

I had to have the pedastals machined on the carbed head in order to run the 1.7 BBC ratio roller rockers.

I'm not sure if there would be any machining necessary if you used rockers arms versus rollers.

You will need to use longer pushrods and depending on what other work you have done, decking the head or block, you will have to use an adjustable pushrod length checker to determine what length pushrods you will need.

the beast heads for making power are:

C5AE-A
C6AE-A
C8AE-A
C8AE-D
C8TE-T (big valves with exhaust rotators. the holy grail of work heads)
these head are leaded gas heads and some later ones (C8's) MAY have hardend seats, but figure on having them installed. I have 3 C8's and only one has hardened seats installed.

D2TE-BA
this is the one you will most likely come across. hardened seats and flows pretty good.

D6TE-G
D5TE-F
D2TE-BA
E4TE-AA
E5TE-DC
same as D2's but some have AIR pipe manifold holes that can be blocked and ran without emissions. some have the later rocker arm mount.

E7TE-DC
17 bolt exhaust head, heart shaped chambers, doesn't flow well. CAN be used with a carb but takes alot of tuning to setup right. this head really needs the EFI computer to run right.

If you use this head run the vacuum advance on manifold vacuum so rather than increase timing as RPM goes up (the mechanical weights will do that), it retards the timing during high load/low vaccum conditions. Set the initial timing and idle RPM with the vacuum advance CONNECTED to avoid a dieseling condition. your going to run ALOT of initial timing and do not use anything but a blue duraspark box or a aftermarket box that retards timing during cranking.

Alright i've hooked on the Crane Truck cam that is a 260H grind because it is low in the RPM band.

I would like the TQ curve the same as stock meaning LOW.

It won't be reved over 3k ever.

So what head would i have stock? It's an 85 and has no AIR ports on the head or manifold.

This truck is my baby. As of next summer it is going to be a backup/2ndary and a truck to drive when you want people to turn heads. Not a racer but a hauler. I'm getting a 88+ IDI next summer to drive to collage, so i'll usually be using this truck to drive around town, take the babe out on dates, evening driver. I'll still be home every night so i'm not going to be leaving it for more than a week without taking it out on the road.

Here is the HP/TQ i would like. around 200-210hp, 300-320FtLbs@ peak at no more than 2K .

Can it be done reasonably?

its prodably one of these: D2TE-BA E4TE-AA.
they used D2TE heads for over ten years mid 70's to mid 80's

Thats not that hard. you can be in that ball park with a cam, manifolds and carb swap. 300hp takes alot of machining and $$$ , but the #'s you want are pretty easy.

if you go with 1.7's or chevy rockers and a bigger cam check all the cyclinders for valve to piston clearance.

usually stock cam/big rockers or stock rockers/big cam will bolt in.

260H is a good cam.

I'll probally get a cam and use the stock rockers. So getting close to 80hp over stock isn't hard.

Will the peak TQ still be low??
Does the 260H have a lopey idle?
