I have a ticking noise coming from the drivers side of my engine. At first I thought it was an exhaust leak, but after replacing the gasket and the headers I realized that was not my problem. The tick is always there. The only time it changes is when I get on the highway and go 65 or 70 mph. It gets very loud at this time. It has about 34 Psi of oil pressure when going 65, so I think this is plenty. After driving in town for a few minutes it quiets down again. I have not replaced any internal parts because the engine only has about 2000 miles on it. Thanks in advance for the help.
I ha da ticking noise on the passenger side like that. After adding Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil and gas it went away. Seems to work. Original problem was probably dirt or gunk.
Ok just to see if any of those three were it I removed the fuel pump and it still ticked and pulled all the pushrods and rolled them on glass and they were straight. didn't want to take anything apart to check the lifters so I pushed down on each one with a pushrod, none could be pushed down. then putting it back together I noticed that one pushrod was longer than the rest so I got my hopes up and thought that was my problem, but it wasn't. replaced it and it still ticks. it has non-adjustalbe rockers on it do you think that a rocker may be bad? we have a few trucks with FE's in them at work and ticking seems to be a very common thing but we usually figure out what it is, but it's when my truck starts ticking that we can't figure out the problem. well if anybody else has an idea please tell but until then it will just have to tick. thanks for the help.
Wrist pin maybe? Did you have new connecting rod small end bushings put in on the rebuild? Did you use new pistons? New wrist pins? Were the oiling holes in the big end of the rod correctly oriented so the wrist pins even get oil? The fact that it gets louder under load going 65 or 70mph kind of gives it away. But definately make sure the valvetrain isn't the cause first.
Because right now, to me, it doesn't really sound like it's in the valvetrain.
ive got the same thing- started a week or so after a fresh oil change. i've narrowed it down to the passnger rear cylinder with the screwdriver-to-the-ear trick and i'm also fairly certain its the top. pulled the cover and couldn see anything wrong or feel anything loose. I think it might be gunk in the lifter, so my next step is to change the oil again, maybe with something a little heavier this time.
This happened to me on a 350 once- stomped on it away from a light and had the ticking- looked and looked and looked, finally changed the oil and it went away.
well the pushrod I put in the motor ended up being about 1/16 shorter than the rest so I went back to the parts store got the replacement and the ticking stopped. but then after a few miles it started again. got it back home and found that the new pushrod was bent. this is starting to get old. heads had a valve job done for the rebuild, so they don't seem the problem, but who knows? so does anybody have any suggestions on what to do now? thanks again for all the help

yeah ended up there was no oil getting to the valve/pushrod because the rocker arm oil holes were stopped up. cleaned them out and changed the oil and all is good, so far. the only reason i found out was that i was going to buy new rockers and when i got it apart the holes in the shaft were a stopped up. hope this helps
