Hi Everyone, I parked my 97 F-150 this past Monday night under the carport, left the drivers window down, got up Tuesday morning to go to work and the cruise control would not work. It worked great on Monday, so me not being a rocket scientist thought I would post and see if I could get some feed back from you guys. Any thing would be a help, I have checked all the fuses and they are all good, the cables are intact, so I am at a loss as where to look. Many thanks is advance.
are you saying that when you turn on the cruise the green cruise light wont stay on on the dash or it stays on but it wont hold speed? if the light just turns on when you hit the "cruise on" button on the steering wheel and goes back out i would unplug the connector on the pressure switch on the front of the master cylinder immediately and then take it into the dealer for replacement. this is the first symptom it what will cause your truck to catch on fire. this happened to me. i don't think your model is in the recall but it does use the same switch. good luck.
97 - 99 didn't have the green 'cruise' indicator; they only started doing that on the 2000 models. 97 - 99 you just have to guess whether it is on or not...
I'd first unplug it under the hood and see if it's corroded or if anything is in it the plug or where it plugs into and then check the fuse as well.
Does your horn work?. Did you check the 20 amp fuse under the hood?. I believe the owner's manual only lists the under dash fuse fuse for the cruise but there is another fuse (mini fuse - 20 amp) under the hood for both the horn and cruise. Mine keeps blowing for some reason, sometimes in a day, sometimes it lasts a few weeks. Can't figure it out. Let me knowi f you can. Either that or the pressure switch at the end of the master cyclinder is pooched.
Not sure if yours is involved, but the first symptom of the fire-causing cruise control recall is that the cruise control stops working. I would immediately disconnect power to your cruise control circuit.
hi everyone, many thanks for your posts and advice, i disconnected the cruise from the master cylinder, the switch was full of brake fluid, haven't checked the horn, but will do that. again many many thanks, shivan22
If you trust your local dealership, go complain to them about the switch failure. Maybe they'll cover it under the recall. Otherwise, just buy a new switch and save your breath. The switch isn't that expensive compared to a fire.
Nice catch! That switch being full of fluid is the cause of the fires. Many have lost their homes due to this. If the dealer won't replace the switch for you, they only cost about $17.00. Easy to replace.

Fords cruise control fire problem is getting bigger...
As reported in article, NHTSA investigates
-500+ fires reported (F-150, Expedition, Navigator)
-700,000 recalled for disconnect (1/05)
-3.7 million potentially same problem
-16 million Fords similiar switches to those recalled
Looks like the location of the switch is the problem, but that's just my 55 sense worth
This is a connection to watch, the article doesn't mention any specific model years.

Reason: added recall date
I've been meaning to reply back to this thread after reading it a couple of months ago. I was driving douwn the freeway and the cruise control just shut off.
I removed the switch too. It had some brake fluid in it. I unplugged it, and went to the dealer. It was about $15 with tax. Came with the new wire harness as well. A couple weeks later, I received a recall notice!

You should be able to get reinbursed for a repair that later becomes a recall, if you got your reciept.
I recieved my recall notices about 2 months ago from FORD. According to the notice, the switch is supposed to be disconnected immediately by the dealer. Replacement switches were due in late November. I just got another FORD notice last week, the parts will not be available till late February. That's the way it's working here in a Northern suburb of Detroit Michigan. I am going to disconnect mine at the first sign of moisture. I use my cruise regularly. The family involved in the fire posted in the July Detroit newspaper lost their entire home, a Colonial with attached garage. The fire started in the garage during middle of the night after the truck had been shut off hours before. The truck was a F-150, I think it was a 200_ something. Other FORD vehicle fires where referenced in the article. Rich Z, still liken and driven the older body style, pre 97, Ford pick-ups.
From what I understand, the deactivation switch has been used on 92 and up. The updated switch has the connection away from the switch by way of wires. My guess would be after the switch starts to leak, as the connection starts to get loose, it will arc and start the fire.
