hello thar. i have a question about rear ends. im building a big offroad rig (77' crew cab) so far im gonna be running a 460 P.I. in it, 4 speed tranny, np205 t-case, and dana 60 front axle. what i dont know is what the rear end should be. dana 70? dana 80? ford 10.25'/ 10.5'? any good help is appreciated.

My vote goes for the D70. You could also use a Sterling 10.25, near as strong as a D70, they do have a couple little quirks but usually not a big concern. I wouldn't recommend a D80 just due to parts availability. Accessories like lockers and all that mess are far easier to find for a 70.
i say dana 70 14 bolt or sterling, whichever you can find the cheapest, they all have a ringer gear within 1/4 inch of each other, 1.5 axle shafts etc all three have their ups and downs, i would do a dana 80 though, you can get most and gear, and an arb or detroit, and some have 37 spline axles....but the massive centersection hangs down so far it defeats the purpose of running larger tires
If you look in the 2wd pre 99superduty truck they will generally have the dana 80 (it will be the 450-550 and up truck) with something like 4.88 and 5.13 gears and disc brakes too, but they will be open diffs, but if the truck is a play toy and not a DD i would weld er' up and save some cash .
If you have the original rear end in it, it is probably already a D70. Check it out. If not, my vote goes for D70 or Sterling. Both are cheap, available and well supported by the aftermarket.
hey, thanks for te information everyone. it has a d70 in it, but it's in bad shape. im thinking that ill run with just that, the d70. just a different one that the one that's in it now.
what do you mean bad shape? if it just needs bearings or gears then put them in, it's gonna be cheaper than buying another one that may or may not need the same thing. There isn't much that can be wrong with it that can't be cheaper than buying another different rearend.
