In the market for a single lid cross over tool box. I've looked a few places, and kind of like the low profile design found at TSC (made by Dee Zee). I'm not sure they make that one in the black finish, but am looking for thoughts on that subject.
Also, it seems that I have noticed previously that boxes made for all full-size pickups may come up a little short on the Super Duty. I'm looking for thoughts on this subject also.
Can't comment on the low profile boxes. I've seen a few, but like the look myself. Anyway, I found the Kobalt brand found at Lowes to be pretty good for the buck. I think these were only available in the bright diamond tred styles, but they fit the superduty as well as anything else I looked at (and better than most, as you noted some come up lacking)
I was going to go with a delta box. Seems like there's a lot of those around my area. Looked at 2 different designs at 3 different shops and all of them seemed sloppy with the corner welds, either big globs hanging off the seem or big gaps... one in particular had a 4" long gap in the seam....
Anyway back to the Kobalts, decent price, decent quality. Not sure who builds them, but no problems with mine.
I have the Dee Zee Gold series and it has held up very well. The main thing to look for is quality in the lid to box seal. You don't want the things inside getting wet and/or dirty.
I had a bed-mounted tool box in a previous truck of mine. It was secured to the bed of the truck and was only as tall as the bedrails, so it didn't stick up above the height of the bedrails. It was NOT the kind that rests on and gets secured to the tops of the bedrails. It was the polished diamond pattern.
In hindsight, I wish I had gotten the black diamond pattern instead of the shiney silver because the silver would reflect when the sun hit it just so, sometimes becomming dangerous because it relected into the cab and hindered my vision.
I was not aware at that time that black was available, but I would have opted for that had I known...
black is really hot, but not unusable. everyone told me i was stupid when painting my old one black, but i loved the look (just painted an old delta black) in my old truck. i think it looks better.
Looked around myself - Sears had 2 in stock - looked like junk. Prices on the web for some of the others like Weatherguard and Delta are pricey. Finally found one at Home Depot - made by Contico, under the Husky brand name, $229. No center tray, not really heavy either, but for the money it will do for the time being. Didn't go rail to rail, lacked about 1-1/2 ' either side, but seems stable enough. Had a "free $10.00 no drill hold down kit" included. What a laugh - 2 J hooks, 2 washers, and 2 nuts. Should have been double the numbers, and the J hooks were too short, just barely long enough to get the nut started. Have to find a better way to mount it.
I would get a Rawson Koenig or a Weatherguard. I have an RK box and love it. They have the best locks that I've seen and will last longer than your truck. They cost almost double the chain store brands, but they are stout units. I believe the RK units are made right here in TX as well.
Dee Zee makes a box specificaly for the super duty. It's in their gold series. I have a gold series box on my 95. It's heavy guage and has rubber seals. As good as a weather guard in my opinion, but a lot less money. I'm going to order one for my 05.
