man that bites. I'm having drivetrain problems too. when I tow my boat or 5th wheel it sounds like gravel rolling around in the tranny or transfer case. It doesn't slip but sure makes an ugly sound. was yours doing that?
It's tough to say what the better choice is, are you going to keep the truck for awhile? Or getting rid of it soon. If keeping it I'd probably get a remanufactured one. Depends too on what parts they are replacing.
There is a guy here in town, Cooks Auto Parts @ 989-539-2202 that has a E40D out of a '96 F150 for 650.00 He says the bed is in sweet shape with no 5th wheel hitch in it from the same truck so it should be in decent shape as the sales guy said it look like the guy took care of it. (unfortunately the truck caught fire) In case your interested.
Anyway I guess it comes down to how much you can spend and what your plans for the truck are. Just my .02
