The leather steering wheel is wearing in one place. Evidentently the previous owner of my '94 EB and I hold the wheel at the same spot. Most of the leather is very shiney. One spot is very grainey leather. What would you use on it to restore and extend the life of it?
I used to use Eagle one leather cleaner, available at auto parts stores. Use an old cotton rag that is slightly damp - spray a little cleaner on, and work it in with the damp rag. You'll be amazed how much grime comes out. Honestly, Ford doesn't make a very good leather wheel. They do get shiny very quickly - I put an NOS leather wheel on my 95, and it has patches just like the one you describe.
Let me guess.... right at the top of the steering wheel?? When I bought my '92, the previous owner had one of those ridiculous slip-on steering wheel covers (complete with massage bumps) on that was meant to cover a huge worn spot at the top of the wheel. I quickly trashed that and bought a Wheelskins leather cover and put it on. It costs more than the usual cover and is more difficult to install, but it's worth it.
My guess is that your leather cover is too far gone for normal restoration. Shoe polish does wonders on shoes but I don't recommend it for your application. A Wheelskin runs about $40. Professional leather restoration will be more than that, I imagine.
