Hello, new guy here. With Fords new pricing I have been looking into a new ( 2005 )xl F250 Super duty extra cab 4x2 short bed AT with the 6.0L diesel and I had a couple of questions. First off- Does International make the new 6.0L? Second- have most of the problems been worked out of this motor? And third- I’ve read so many different mpg reports I don’t know what to think, can anyone with this truck( or similar) tell me UNLOADED, the mileage you all are getting- highway / town? This would be a daily driver and toy hauler. Thanks for any help.
I do think that most of the problems have been worked out, that doesn't mean you won't have any, but all in all I think its a good strong motor. I would recomend to look at the crew cab instead of the extended cab much much more room and a better ride, but that is only my opinion. I dont think the price is all that much more and you will have a better trade in value in the future. The fuel milage Seems to be all over the board with other members, I would exspect to get around 14-15 mpg over all.
On saturday, I flew to Boston and picked up my new 2005 F-350 CC, 4X4, PSD Harley edition. I drove 700 miles on sunday and 700 miles on monday to make it home. Although I never had it above 70, I was amazed that my average fuel mileage (calculated by hand, not using the computer - which was on the optimistic side a bit) was 18.5. On my last leg of the trip, which was almost all flat terrain, I got 19.1 going 65 pretty much the whole way. Remarkable for a brand new truck of that size, I think.
Well I had my heart set on a little 2004 Tacoma with 17 town and 21 hwy, but after seeing that the diesel is getting around this mpg in a full size truck, its starting to really make me wonder. I just would LOVE to know what this truck would actually do on fuel before I make a final decision. Why cant all the 6.0L’s get about the same mileage?
I really think it is how peopple fill them up. I get an average 16 mpg filling to the same level all the time. My first few fill-ups i varied between 18 and 21 but was filling like my old gasser(fill till the nozzle clicks off) found out the foaming of the fuel will shut off the nozzle so fill right to the edge of the filler now.
Yes all engines are made by International. The International version of the 6.0l is the VT365. (The International version of the 7.3 is the T444E). International was supposed to have made a 4.5 liter V-6 version of the 6.0 for the F-150 etc. but from what I've read on these pages and else where Ford was not real happy with the quality control of the '03 and '04 6.0 and the deal fell apart. IH had the motor listed on their web site at one time but it has vanished.
I kept a 4X4 block of wood and a 2X8 that I put on top of the block for a ramp to help in fueling for my '95 & '96. I hope that these new Fords are easier to fill. I also keep my fuel mpg in 10,000 mile blocks so I can have a good feel for actual mpg and it will tell me if I may have a problem with the engine. About 75% of my miles are towing a 7500 lb 5-W. I averaged 12 mpg with my '96 at 65 to 70 m/p/r and no excessive head wind.
